    S.W.E. Shift

I've been playing with all of Erdnase's shifts recently, and the common thread that runs between them seems to be initially finding a balance of pressure between the two packets. Then it's a question of increasing the pressure to the exact point that the packets start to move, and instantly...

    Uses for the Second Deal

But, with a bottom deal, the move comes at exactly the moment that the spectator is burning the deck. How much more impressive would it be to allow the spectator to turn the card over themselves, which they could with a second deal. A good second deal can be performed almost in slow motion, with...

Am I on the right road?

Yes, there are some flourishes in Royal Road, classics like the Charlier cut, thumb fan and spring. I'd recommend getting the book before investing in the DVDs though. It's a lot less money, and, in my opinion, is the number one essential book for card magicians.

    TCTCSA taught in the Trilogy?

No, it's not, but the first phase of Pandora bears some similarity to it.

What do you want to see next?

Some billet work would be nice, but a proper in-depth study of Erdnase's Open Shift would make my dreams come true.

    Question(s) about Rights...

I think the procedure should be, if in doubt, give credit. I can't really see any reason to deliberately avoid doing this, unless you wish to try and hide the fact that your "invention" isn't totally original. Most serious magicians will probably want to vary your effect anyway to suit their own...

    The 1 Hand Card Spring

I think that theoretically, it could be done with either grip. However, the corner grip technique does seem to get more control and distance with springs in general, so that would be the option I'd go with. And, just on a factual point, the corner grip was first published in 1906 by T Nelson...

Need help finding the source & past development of this psychic spread force...

I know that Nate Leipzig and Max Malini were instrumental in developing forces of this type. I imagine that you could find some work on them in Dai Vernon's Tribute to Nate Leipzig and The Magic of Max Malini, but (shamefully) I don't own either of them so I can't say for sure.

    Front to back hand palm?

Jeff McBride's Art of Card Manipulation DVD series is the most best resource for this kind of thing, unless you have the time and money to track down all the old classic books. If you're simply looking for that one move then probably the Dan and Dave download would be the most cost-effective way...

    SW Elevator

They look very similar when performed smoothly, but S W Elevator is a lot harder (given that you have to perform a succession of S W E Shifts), which is why I think Mr Kenner simplified it into Shifty.

    SW Elevator

Very nicely performed, but as Ben Long said, that's Shifty not S W Elevator.

    Steranko on cards

As far as I know, this is his only book. I really like the material in it, it's good visual stuff, a bit like a warm-up By Forces Unseen, although you do need a table for a lot of it. I understand the new edition that Dan and Dave are selling has some extra annotation that the original didn't...

    More Cards... Gamblers Cards

I may not have the most sensitive touch in the world, but they seem exactly like Wynns to me. Personally, I love them, and I didn't know Mr Turner had stopped producing them so thanks for that. I'll be buying a load before they run out.

    Mental Card Forces

I started to write a reply but then I realised it would be exposure. PM me if you're interested and I'll let you know where to find this kind of thing and my psychological force technique.

    Some Books

In my opinion Expert Card Technique is an absolutely essential purchase for the serious card man (or woman). If you can find it, try and get hold of the 1961 3rd edition, published by Faber, rather than the Dover version, because it has two extra chapters at the end, one by Dai Vernon on card...

    Ethics of Magic

This perception is our fault (by which I mean magicians in general). If we were better at presenting ourselves and our magic people wouldn't think things like this.

    Where to Learn Some Passes...

There are a few slightly different viewpoints on what the words "shift" and "pass" mean. Some people would say the two words are interchangable, with "shift" being more of a gamblers' term, and "pass" being the magicians' word. Some would define a pass as strictly being a move in which the upper...

    Inspirations for Card Magic

Definitely start by making sure you've got a good grounding in Royal Road, Expert Card Technique and Expert at the Card Table. You can create a lifetime of material just from the sleights taught in ther. However, some useful sources for further building up your armoury are Daryl's Encyclopedia...

Your Most Polished Sleight And Other Sleights!

My most polished sleights are definitely my double lifts. My biggest challenge at the moment is Erdnase's Open Shift. I think I've got the mechanics down OK, but making it invisible seems insurmountable. One day......

    Best Playing Cards

I would recommend trying out a few different decks, but if you want cheap and very good quality then have a look around on eBay for casino decks. 52-and-Jokers is a good shop to start with. Generally, these are Bee, Aristocrat or Gemaco cards, and (in my opinion), are better quality than...
