Delving into coin magic, what coins to use...

That is the trade off. I like the visual component and they talk a lot less than AU / BU. For my performance environment, I'm less worried about talking and more worried about visual. If you go to a coin shop you can rub them together to see how they sound.

Mentalism vs Mental Magic and where to start

For the most part. A great example is the tossed out deck. How you perform it and what you perform before and after it matter in how it is perceived. If you reveal the cards selected by the audience members verbally, it looks more like mentalism. If you turn over giant playing cards on stage...

Mentalism vs Mental Magic and where to start

Mental Magic is a magic trick with a presentation that is based on psychic phenomena. Mentalism is the demonstration of psychic abilities. But, the lines are not clear. A book test where you discern the word that someone selected from a book falls within mentalism. Rich Furguson's (where...

    Performance vs Other Magicians

I would pick the performance that audience likes because that is what matters. However, I'd love to get constructive criticism from other magicians even on a performance that entertains the audience. There is always room for improvement.

    Deck ID

I'm stumped. Can't find anything exactly like this. It appears to be a variation on a Meme-Tekel deck (with the pairs being "mates" rather than identical cards) along with a one way design. I'm still thinking that there may be markings on the backs (if you could post a picture of two...

    Deck ID

Are the cards marked? The back design looks like there may be ways of multiple marking like DeLand's $100 Deck (which is marked and a stripper). The dots inside the circle appear to have random dots larger than the others and the markings are not symmetrical.

Exactly. You probably want VF (Very Fine) or XF (Extra Fine) grading. The talk even less. The years don't really matter unless you are going to be calling attention to them. As long as the coins all look about the same (i.e. one isn't near mint condition and the other you can't see the...

There is something nice about handling silver coins. Morgans are great. I like Walking Liberties and Kennedy halves.

    Good magic book suggestions?

I'd start with mastering the basics. Card College for Cards and David Roth's Expert Coin Magic for coins. Get the foundation and build on it. If you want more challenging stuff, Troy Hoosier's Moments and Destroyers is great for coins as is Chris Kenner's Totally Out of Control. For...

    Substitutions for Rope

Velvet cord. Since you are using it with a ring, it could be the type of cord used by jewelry stores to keep people from stealing the ring. Not my idea, but Greg Wilson's.

Saturday Night Contest - Resolutions for 2018

2017 included shoulder injury, spinal fusion surgery and being very busy at work. I did get to do a lot of camping and some kayaking as part of Scouting. I also got to spend an amazing week sailing in the Florida Keys (three weeks after surgery). Magic took a back seat. I did enjoy reading...

    what about patter

I agree that who you are performing for matters. Your original post said you were performing for a stranger not for friends. My original comment was from the viewpoint of performing for an audience of strangers who have come to see you perform. I'm not offended at the mature theme and...

Is coin magic one of the hardest?

Difficulty is a matter of perspective. Doing a Scotch & Soda routine is easy. Doing THIS CARD STUFF by Ernest Earick is insanely difficult. @Maaz Hasan's recommendations are spot on. I'd recommend Eric Jones's Metal, Volume 1, first and foremost. I did a review of Metal HERE. Eric is an...

It really just requires the right material to learn from and practice. Eric Jones' Metal is a great place to start.

    Dr. Daley

Awesome post. I knew about Daley from Stars of Magic. Great stuff in there. There are a lot of magicians from that era (1930-1960s) that contributed a lot but weren't well known. Most magic publications were periodicals or books that included work of multiple magicians -- often without...

    The Equivoque Force or Choice

Use whatever suits your style. I'll use any of the following: "I want you to pick up two piles..." "I want you to give me two piles..." "I want you to take two piles..." I like, "I want you to point to one pile with your right hand..." as my first instruction. You have a 20% to 33% chance...
