    Got a rather rude comment a few weeks ago.

    Answer: "Hopefully never." I start out my parlor show with an effect where the script begins like this: When people find out I'm a magician, the first question they ask is "How did you become so interested in magic?" I suspect the question they are really asking is "Why is a grown man so...

    Top Palm Issues

    The wrist angle is more like 20 to 30 degrees rather than 90 degrees. Start with you right first (index) finger along the left outside corner of the deck (with the nail at the bottom of the deck), your second and third fingers with the first phalanx touching the front bottom edge of the deck...

    Lost Motivation

    @Maaz Hasan, it sound like you are a bit depressed about your injury and the lack of healing. I'm with you. I had what I thought was a shoulder injury from swimming last April. Started to lose feeling, strength and motor control in my left hand. That progressed to the point where I was...

    Stage Magic and My First Post! Also looking to be a apprentice of some sorts

    Hey Jack... welcome to the forums. The shows you seem to be talking about are referred to "parlor" magic. Essentially a magic show performed in front of a group of people in their living room or parlor. Parlor magic can be for five people or fifty or more. It would be difficult to do a...

    Marked Decks

    If you have the ability to force, peek or control a card, you don't need to use a marked deck for what most people use it for. The challenge is to use it in a way that doesn't scream MARKED DECK. The "You Pick My Card" trick is a perfect example of that. Also, using a marked deck in...

    Any way to turn a heckler to your side?

    That's unfortunate. As you get past the beginner phase, you will realize that making magic entertaining is more than doing a trick your audience can't figure out.

    Marked Decks

    Spectators should never insist on examining your deck. That means you are presenting magic as a puzzle or challenge. Design your effect so that there is no reason to suspect the deck. Any effects where you use a marked deck should be done in a manner that raises no suspicion about the deck.

    Dai Vernon's Spellbound::Nervous!! Also, clean-ups

    If the audience is asking to see what is in your other hand, you have already failed. The best clean up is to not get in that position. Imbibe your magic with a sense of significance. It isn't a trick but a performance. The goal is to entertain, not to fool. If you convey to your audience that...

    Dai Vernon's Spellbound::Nervous!! Also, clean-ups

    Part of it is belief. You have to believe what your audience is seeing. If the coin has appeared to vanish, you have to believe it has vanished. You get there through practicing so you do the sleights without thinking and by having an internal script. For example, when I do the final loads...

    First Performance in Two Years - Failure

    I was at a lecture with Darwin Ortiz. About half way through an effect he just stoped and said something like, "I'm not feeling it with this one, I don't think it is going to work. Let's try something else, we can come back to this later." I was doing a show for around 75 people. I was...

    Trouble with the break

    Ignore what I said about the break in the deck being level. For some reason I was thinking Vernon Depth Illusion / Marlo Tilt. Small break, light pressure with 4th finger and light pressure on top of deck with thumb.
