Advanced Use of Classic Trick Decks

Go buy a copy of Encyclopedia of Card Tricks . It has sections on Stripper Decks, Svengali Decks and rough and smooth (see slick cards and diachlyon (the predecessor of roughing fluid) as well as Mene-Tekel decks, double backers, double facers, short cards, etc. There are some great effects...

    Kids party magic for twins...help!

You can do separate effects for each one. Hat Tear for one and Sponge Balls for another. There is no reason why you have to have them both help with one effect. Your kids show should have multiple opportunities for spectators to be involved because there often is a little brother or sister or...

    Kids party magic for twins...help!

Eric Ross's Election - Play to whether as twins, it is better to be similar or different. Have them each select a card as a "test" to see if they are more alike or different. Alternatively, you can have them perform a trick themselves. Set up the deck with the red cards on top and the black...

    What to buy?

You should be able to find the Card College and Card College Light, Lighter and Lightest series by Roberto Giobbi in German. Those are the best sources to learn card magic. Royal Road is a difficult read even if english is your first language.

I Need All The Help I Can Get

Acting and editing. This can be replicated in a live show. Just go up to a spectator before the show and ask them if they will help you with an effect. Tell them you are going to ask them to name a card. Explain that most people name the Ace of Spades or Queen of Diamonds so you want them to...

Making a birthday party magic kit

It depends on the age. For younger kids, do the ball vase, drawer box, pen through coins box, etc. The magic is in the prop and it is pretty much self working. Look at Fantasma's kids magic sets for inspiration. I love the magic fish. You may have to repackage them though because I think...

    Transition to parlor

Neither cards nor coins play well in a parlor setting. There are exceptions such as The Miser's Dream, Cards Across or Six Card Repeat. Parlor effects need to play big so that everyone is involved. Cups & Balls can work for around 20 people -- probably not if you are doing a show for 100...

    Pinochle deck

There is a chapter on Pinochle Deals in Nick Trost's Subtle Card Creations, Volume 2. I'm not sure if those require a pinochle deck or not. Nick Trost's Pinochle Deal from The Card Magic of Nick Trost p. 239 (full pinochle deck using Gilbreath Principle) Nick Trost's Double Pinochle with an...

Good Books for an Aspiring Illusionist and Cardist?

Additionally, I think the starting point for any magician (other than someone who just wants to do cards) is Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic.

    Two cup routine

Really, you just need to learn the basics of cups and balls and can build from there. There are a lot of moves that don't rely on the cups being nested. I'd get Michael Ammar's Cups and Balls e-book from L&L E-Publishing.

I Need All The Help I Can Get

The general principle would be in These Books. A simple way to do it would be to have cards in multiple pockets. When performing, I have two front pants pockets, two back pants pockets, one shirt pocket, two inside jacket pockets, one outside breast pockets and two side pockets. That is 10...

I'm new to magic, any advice?

This is excellent advice. If you can afford it, get Card College. If you can't afford to buy the whole set at once, get the first two books first -- they were designed to be a complete course in card magic... until the other books came along. Also excellent advice on getting books. I've...

    Sponge Balls?

Mark Wilson's Complete Course is the first resource to use (but please don't point at the hand that is supposed to have the ball). Goshman sponges are the gold standard, I used another brand once and the dye got all over my hands and my sheepdog puppet (luckily the both my hands and the puppet...
