Very true, I would never worry about adding money for a torn deck, as it should be in your mind when you set your fees (props, loss of props, travel expenses...etc) and if anyone asks you can say there is a fee for cleaning up your own cards after you ruin the deck in a game of 51 (torn) card...

The difference is in preference. I do a get ready dl when performing, but have practiced both, I just prefer getting a break. The problem is magicians think like magicians, even when they think they're thinking like laymen. Laymen don't know about dl's, breaks, strikes or not...they don't care...
