    Closeup Competition

Maybe, to be different, try something other than cards? If you must, I would suggest one long effect (don't make it boring though) or two effects, both about 4 mins. They'll be judging more than just your ability to do the tricks though, make your presentations original. If you do an oil...

    Which group are you in?

Or start a new post a day later. I think the fourth group is probably the most annoying...but that's just me. On topic however: First group: The strong silent types. They either watch a lot of DnD style magic or want to copy David Blaine. Watch me explain (heh, get it? 'Watch this...

    Which group are you in?

But what if your coin does have wings on it? I'm just kidding, though I figure it would be one hell of a sight gag, 'the coin actually turned invisible, grew wings and flew to my other hand'. (open hand to coin that now has paper wings attached). And now you know how part of my mind...

Do you want to fool 98% or 100% of the time?

Morgician, An inspiration as always. I was skeptical at the first post, but when you cleared up that magicians were not included in your goals I do agree. I have a 145ish IQ (higher online, lower in person 145 average) so yay 2%! Probably what drew me into magic was my ability to...

What Is It To Be A Magician?

Very good read, as always, William. I've put a lot of thought into whether or not magic is an art. I've come to the conclusion that magic is the use of certain science principles, some of which are psychology which may or may not be considered 'science', through a mix of moves and skills...

    Thoughts on a Newborn Illusion

Sounds like a good effect if you're always doing magic together. This could be pretty sweet solo if you already have two decks out (do as i do effect) or something similar. Just thinking outloud.

Rate this trick from the Mindfreak!

I will say that the amount of rings he had on would distract me from the magic as a spectator, but as an effect it was pretty damn good. Even pre-arranged with both people, the effect is awesome. I'll go further and say this, I'm not going to say if it's right or wrong for you to use...

    "Let me see the deck"

Another subtlety that you can use with a Svengali is to fan the deck before doing the trick. If you give it a few fans casually before shuffling and during your introduction the deck will appear normal. No one looks closely enough to notice the repeating card, just flash the faces and act like...

    Two Questions

1.I would say a performance. I had a good 6 person crowd, everyone enjoying the magic, and one guy asked for one more trick before I go. I told him it won't hit him until I've walked away, but I'm going to give you this pen to hold onto for me. (went towards his front pocket, 'put it in') and...

    First Stage Performance

You can have the people on stage raise their hands and put them down if you call out their card. Or have chairs on stage. Having them go back out (unless you've allotted yourself the proper scripting) seems unnecessary. You'll be fine, just don't rush yourself. Even on time constraints...

    Finally Landed First Restaurant Gig

Understandable. As long as you continue to grow as a magician you should make it out okay. Some of my best sessioning has been through PM's and Emails, some people even send videos back and forth. Just food for thought

    Finally Landed First Restaurant Gig

I agree a lot of your study should be solo. But having good friends in magic can help when you're stuck for a move or just want to session/jam. Be careful who you do it with, a lot of magicians will pawn your hard work off as their own, but it's not hard to find some who are honest...

Bad News Mates: I'm Quitting Magic Forever

I was opening a routine with that gag at a party. I, however, got lucky and the card was on top...Nothing can top such a trick, so I put the cards down, took my bow, and walked away. You, however, got away with something awesome. Glad to hear that magicians have luck on their side.

    Finally Landed First Restaurant Gig

That's awesome. I hear good things from Close UP, The Real Secrets of Magic by David Stone. (30 dollar book, not a bad price) that helps with what tables to choose, how to get into magic and how to get out of it. Probably my next purchase magic-wise, as I have enough 'magic' as it is, I...

Spouses and Significant Others in Magic

My girlfriend (of over a year and a half now) loves that I do magic. She's actually encouraging me in my endeavors of attempting to get a job as a magician for supplemental income (hopefully transitioning into full time in the future). She loves magic and actually hates knowing how it's done...

    Tattoo's

Don't have to worry about me getting one. I did recently (week and a half ago) get a tattoo of Rafiki, from the Lion King, on my arm. I'll edit in a link when I get the picture online.

Awesome to hear, congratz on the job. Ever plan on doing something other than cards?

    Open and Move

I've been doing Aaron Delong's impromptu haunted pack since I saw his lecture, the deck moves forward and then back to starting position leaving one card out jogged. Pull it out and toss it on the table, let the spectator turn it over. Yours looks pretty sweet though.

    Magicians in NC

Tri C's was awesome this year, both the talent and the attendees were amazing to hang out with. Scott did a good job with it. I can't wait to go back next year. I almost wish I had time to travel to Charlotte for the sleight club meetings, they were a great group of magicians with some really...
