    New trick

My responses are a combination of memory and research. I did look up and read all of the effects except Marlo's Think a Card because that is the one book listed that I don't have.

    Simple Idea

I had picked up the same deck for possible use in an any drink called for routine. Decided to work the routine a little differently allowing a free choice for spectators. If I recall, the deck has a one way back, so there is a lot you can do with that. Also, how about a routine playing Gin-Rummy?

YouTube Rant (Moderator Note: Strong Language)

What William is saying is that the magic community sees ethics as something that is important. Look at the posts in this thread and you will see that EVERY experienced magician who is involved with the magic community (i.e. knows, hangs out with and works with other magicians) has said the same...

    Magic Party Favors

Union and Citizen playing cards? You could probably use effects that the attendee can do to themselves from a shuffled deck. That way, they read the instructions and fool themselves. I like the Fortune Telling Fish. The ESP cards, I'm not so excited about. They will get more use out of...

    First gig help

Treat them like people. Talk to them ahead of time. I had one woman who saw Blackstone Sr. perform and remembered it like it was yesterday. And then I had one where the conversation before the show went like this: Her: "Wow, you have a lot of stuff there." Me: "I know, that is why I check...

I'm doing research about magic tricks (and other hobbies), can you help?

Good sources include Denis Behr's (www.conjuringarchive.com), the Conjuring Art's Research Center's Ask Alexander (www.askalexander.org) (which allows anyone to search, but you need a membership to acess the material); and http://magicref.tripod.com/books.htm which provides tables of contents...

    New trick

Just six? Yeah, I couldn't resist. The plot is the card version of the "triple prediction" using the principle that Rev mentioned. Here are some sources of similar routines: 1. Magician's Willpower, Art of Magic, p. 176 (1909) (Magician names cards and spectator correctly selects --...

Because, after that, there really isn't anything else you can do.

A couple of thoughts. Wow, 15 minutes of a self-absorbed idiot inartfully justifying exposing magic using explicatives as well as faulty logic. I'm still trying to figure out how repeatedly using explicatives makes you sound more intelligent. What a tool. What a waste of my time listening to...

    Mental card force help

I typically don't go through much talking about why you don't want to pick a certain card, but instead mention each card using the verbal and nonverbal cues mentioned above. "You might choose one of the end cards, the [name one end card] or the [name the the other end card]. You might choose...

    Mental card force help

If you stand to one side of the cards, that typically eliminates the two cards closest to you. When laying down the cards, have a slightly larger space on either side of the force card. Start at the two outside cards, then the inside card you don't want them to pick, then the inside card you...

    Do we have the right?

Christopher's posts pretty much hit the nail on the head. If someone publishes magic, they have a copyright on the words in the book. They do not have a copyright on the methods. The methods could be patented, but that requires disclosing the methods and the patent only lasts for a certain...

    Magic and Law

Interesting read. There was a good series of articles in Genii in the last year or so on the law written by a intellectual property lawyer relating to magic. That is probably the most detailed discussion of the topic I've seen.

    How to Work with Volunteers

Tamariz's discussion of the Seven Veils (on the DVD "Our Magic") talks about LOVE for the audience, so in my mind that includes the spectators. A quick story. At one show, I was doing my closing egg bag routine. There was around 150 to 200 people (pretty much all adults) seated about 10 to a...

    How to Work with Volunteers

You need to kid around a bit more... get it... kid around? With kids, I tend to break from traditional logic. A lot of kids show performers will use being selected as a reward for kids behaving or ask for volunteers to raise their hands and sit still. My advice to those performers is that if...

    Forcing a Celebrity

For forcing a celebrity or forcing something else? It is unacceptable to use a psychological force unless you have an out. It doesn't have to be a free choice as long as it appears to be a free choice. Have the audience shout out names. Write down the names they shout out, fold them up and...

    How to Work with Volunteers

So in another thread, dealing with volunteers came up. I think this is an important enough concept that it should have its own thread. The flow issue can be addressed by having an strong introduction. As the last set of volunteers sits down, you begin your presentation for the next...
