I'm pretty much a beginner at magic and a man who lives down the street owns a magic shop and is helping me. He wants to know what tricks I want to learn... what tricks do you think I should say I want to learn?
Mark Wilson's encyclopedia of magic or Joshua Jay's Encyclopedia of magic would be where I would start. David (Reality One) made a post a little bit ago with what he'd purchase if he only had $50 and I think that has got to be the best use of that money all written down in one place. For a beginner it would be a great crash course as well. Here's his recommendation edited by me
Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic - $6
5 Half Dollars - $4.50 at a bank
12 Pack of Red and Blue Bicycle Standard Decks - $16 at Sams or Costco
1 Package of 4 Goshman 2 inch Supersoft Sponge Balls - $5 at Penguin
1 Invisible Deck - $8 at Penguin
100 Feet of soft rope from the hardware store - $10 at Home Depot
I would look for magic that is specifically marketed towards "beginners" in magic. They provide a pretty solid base on getting a handful of tricks down and from there you can develop your own style and expand. Best of luck to you!
