This is my review on John Carneys great 2 dvd set Book Of Secrets
Descriptions
The Video of Secrets Vol. 1 (DVD)
Five routines from The Book of Secrets. This DVD contains John's practical handling of the cigars from the purse, two little known linking ring moves, his take on the classic miser's dream, a humorous ball routine using grapes, and variations on one of the best and most visual card tricks ever: Leipzig's Opener.
The Video of Secrets Vol. 2 (DVD)
This DVD contains five more ideas from The Book of Secrets. John explains several very visual methods for vanishing a handkerchief, a variation of the classic Victor-Vernon routine with five coins and a champagne glass, a most efficient control of several cards, a hybrid of the Rosini and Ramsay thimble routines, and the classic cards up the sleeve using the entire deck, with a surprise finish.
Cost
$38 for US and Canada $43 for Overseas
The Video of Secrets Vol. 1 (DVD)
As said above this dvd contains five routines from the book
cigars from the purse
This routine is very funny and great to watch how are they coming from this small purse!? John says the small purses are very hard to find you might have to go to a leather store to buy some.
John as he does teaches this very well and goes over the little nuances and subtleties i dont smoke so something i probably wont do but still good.
Linking Rings
John Teaches 2 less known moves in linking rings. They are acually moves from the first original linking rings, the method was lost but some moves where found, he teaches some more phycological things and his thoughts he teaches it clearly one of the moves is very knacky but looks great i do have a set of rings so i will practice these.
classic miser's dream
Ive Always loved this routine i couldnt wait to see his version.
This routine plays very well on stage as you would know if you do this he teaches some methods for producing coins. loads and many more this routine is fun to practice it is a great routine which i might just perform.
Off The Vine
This is an impromptu routine with grapes or anything edible would be sufficient it is a fun little routine with not many hard moves if gives you time to work on your performance.
Leipzig's Opener
Now for people who went to the Superday weekend this is the card effect he performed for us it was great. Its fun to perform involes the spectator he teaches some Steals , Palms Handwashes and so on. it gets great reactions amongst laymen i have perform this many times with success great routine taught well.
The Video of Secrets Vol. 2 (DVD)
Silver and Glass
5 Coins Visually appear in many places then the coins vanish 1 by 1 and appear in the glass.
Once again a little reference to the superday weekend this is the amazing coins to glass John performed at the lecture. This routine is great for coin men i believe it uses many palms, vanishes and so on variations of apperances as well it has the whole shabang. He goes through each move well. This is one you will need to practice it is really a great routine.

Up My Sleeve
This is Johns version of Erdnase's Sleeving the deck found in Expert at the Card Table i believe so. A Card is Selected then it is explained that cards go up the sleeve a card is pulled out of the shoulder and it is wrong eventually the whole deck is up your sleeve except 1 card there card.
The routine is fun unfourtunately i don t usually wear sleeves so i won t be able to perform this. He teaches a convincing force and again explains nuances and phycological items.
Multiple Slip
This is an effective Aces to basically anywhere i presume.
The four aces are produced from behind the sleeve the aces are really placed in seperate parts of the deck and then with a riffle they are produced from behind the sleeve.
This is a very fun impromptu routine and John teaches a few moves. The production the control and so on the control might be a bit knacky at first but it will help you not only with this routine but with others as well.
Thimbles
Unfortunately i will not be performing this its a good routine but not my kind of thing.
5 thimbles appear simultanesouly on the fingers until all the fingers and the thumb have one on them. The Thimbles jump across to the other hand its bassically a thimbles across.
The method is very interesting the productions arent to hard but the thimbles jumping across from hand to hand will take time to practice john once again does a great job explaining this.
Rubbed Away
This is a routine with a hankerchief where the magician attempts to find out if it is a right handed or a left handed hankerchief. the hankerchief keeps coming undone until it is placed into the other hand then the magician makes the hankerchief smaller and smaller until it vanishes.
This routine is very simple good for just hanging around or even like john on stage John teaches the knot and many other aspects to achieve this affect it the vanish involves a little something something but you can always replace it with another .
Overall this dvd was a great buy i really enjoyed the material on it some i wont use some i have and still will use i enjoyed it i recommend it
Also the dvd quality was great not HD but it was great no fuzziness or anything
hopefully you enjoyed the review and you survived it
Cheers Tom
