Hey fellas, as you know I am not really a beginner but am looking to make my routines even stronger. I want to be able to get "more" out of each effect.

For example: Currently I cram 15 effects into a 45 minute close up show. This is entirely too many. A good magician should be able to do that with probably half that amount of material by his / her patter, jokes, socializing, etc.

I'm not looking for effects....do not list out effects for me. Heaven knows I don't need to purchase more magic.

What I am looking for is a reference or solid advice on how to get more out of less if that makes sense.

Here is a solution:

The Five Points in Magic by Juan Tamariz

GREAT BOOK. I can't say much about it because it's just gold. Pure gold.

Trust me.

I have heard that it is a great read Casey. I just need to know for sure or not if it discusses routining as well.

The description does sound like it will hit on additional items and senses so that will be of great benefit to me as well. Thanks for the suggestion.

Maybe you could write out your entire show ie make a script like for a play. It may make it easier to find where you can add jokes, make conversation, make things flow better by removing effects etc.

Edit
Eugene Burger I think has a book out that has a full section on this subject. Not to sure though.

Edit squared:

this is an example of what I meant by scripting an effect. Just apply this to your entire show and viola, you're part way there.

alvo stockman has a free PDF ebook on penguin on how to script out your show. It's free so it doesn't have a lot of material but I found it pretty helpful.

The book: Scripting For Magicians is also another good read.

If you are in need of help coming up with a script...I suggest contacting Eugene Burger directly.

Thanks guys. I will look into Stockman's ebook and Scripting for Magicians or Magic...which ever it is.

I have Strong Magic and Maximum Entertainment but I don't recall finding what I was looking for in them regarding scripting and routining.

15 effects for 45 mins?

Yeah that's WAAAY too many effects and you're going to end up carrying waaay too many props or items. Honestly, I'd say you should limit yourself to maybe 7 at the most and just pace them enough to were people have time to enjoy them and understand them.

"More Than Meets the Eye" by Dan Harlan.

I picked it up for $15 bucks at his lecture, and you can get it through him at Danharlanmagic@yahoo.com

These notes are amazing, he has you go through and write down every effect you can, or want to perform. Then shows you how to script, routine, and form any type of show for any audience.

He also goes over some business as well. Giving you contracts, and useful information for making money.

I highly, highly recommend it. :D

PS: His new effect "Awakening" is freaking AMAZING if you do any type of rope effects (Fiber optics)
