If you really like this idea / plot but are not sure you can market the effect because its been done before, look into purchasing Harry Anderson's "Gang of Four".

I use this a lot when I am performing at large tables and need to include a lot of people. It kills.

Some great ideas here. You could try having three different cards selected and lost (controlled to the top). show a blank card, turn it over, and place it on your palm (actually switch it for the three selections, but pretending they were still a single card). Ask them to place their hand on top of yours, and one beneath. I would imagine you could slip your hand out at that point, and they shouldn't feel the other cards. When they open their hands, there are three cards.
