So I'm putting together a show that will be a combination of theater and a magic show. I plan on using characters I do not own but the storyline will be an original one that I will write. I was told by my friends in the theater that they have to pay a certain amount of money when they have a run of let's say Evil Dead: The Musical, for example. They said that I might have to pay for the use of copyrighted characters even if I have an original storyline involving them. Has anyone used popular characters in a stage show before? Can you tell me anything about how I need to go about this or where I can find out about possible restrictions or laws?

Great question. What if the characters names were changed just the slightest bit? Would that give you a loophole? Example: David Copperfield could be David Coppertone
