COSMOS - Greg Rostami

After purchasing Stuck by Greg, I was hooked on his magic. Stuck has become one of my favorite effects, and it is one of the few coin tricks I like to perform. I bought Cosmos a few months ago and haven't seen any reviews, so I thought I'd give it a shot.

EFFECT:
It is basically the same effect as Out of this World, except it is impromptu, and the spectators shuffle the deck as much as they want.

IMPORTANT INFO:
-completely impromptu
-can borrow a spectators deck
-all setup is done during the course of the trick
-extremely simple
-needs two spectators

QUALITY:
Well the video is not up to theory 11 or E standards, but it does not create any problems. I have no complaints about this.

TEACHING:
Greg's teaching is very good. I only watched the video twice before I picked everything up. He takes his time and goes over the handling in full detail, once again, no complaints.

METHOD:
When he explained the method, I was floored. When I watched the demo video, it said, parts of the video are cut to protect the method, so I wasn't very intrigued. But the method is genius. I thought the secret would have to be complex culling or extremely slightly, but there are almost no moves. It is almost self working. You shuffle the deck, and then the SPECTATORS SHUFFLE the deck completely, and then the trick begins. You are completely ready after they shuffle, and do not have to do any more work. This is why the trick is so impressive. Spectators never know, ever. This effect is mainly about presentation, and deserves to be built up. Anyone can do this effect, but you will need to make sure your presentation is solid. Greg covers that area in detail also.

MY THOUGHTS:
I always loved Out of This World, but the setup was annoying, and I don't like tricks that involve that kind of prep work. I never thought there would be a way to do this impromptu, I tried working on a method for a while, but I never had anything good. I love Greg's version, and use it as a closer all the time. The fact that the spectators shuffle makes it the perfect trick. The reactions are incredible. You have full control over what happens, and there is no way the spectators can mess anything up for you. I usually have them make one or two mistakes so it seems like it could be pure coincidence and not so much a trick.

PROS:
-Impromptu
-Spectators shuffle
-Any deck, any time

CONS:
-method could be discovered if you don't practice well, but that is true with any trick so not a problem.

FINAL THOUGHTS:
If you like out of this world, do not hesitate to buy this trick, you will not regret it.

9/10

I remember seeing that a long time ago, and really thought it looked interesting. I already have an impromptu/spectator can shuffle method that works great, so I never picked this up. Now you have peaked my interest again....

Would this fool someone who already knows the original out of this world?

Wow this really looks good. From the description of using no sleights and a borrowed shuffled deck i'm completely clueless as to how this would be accomplished. Is the effect structured the same as a regular out of this world routine? (Spectator choosing where to put the cards, switching the color half way through, etc.)

Yes it would. I have fooled magicians with this, the method is something no magician would think of.

Yes, the basic effect is the magician borrows cards or uses his own, shuffles them, then the spectators are both allowed to shuffle. Each spectator is passed half the deck and they divide them into piles based on if they think it is a red or black card. Each spectator does this separately. At the end, the spectators turn over their cards and one pile is red, one pile is black.

The method is way out of the box, it is a completely original concept I'm sure you will love it.

well i wasnt fooled by the performance and when Alex (a friend of mine) bought COSMOS i understood that i had figured both methods out. I figured the improptu version and when i heard there was a gimmicked one i immediately came up with a way to do it with a gimmicked deck and guess what-it is the same way described in the video. In my opinion the best "out of this world " is in Devil's Picturebook by Derren Brown (pretty much the same principle is used). But COSMOS is still a great effect ,though not one i will use.

Isnt something like COSMOS included in the TA set?

I was a fan of Derren Brown's Out of This World for a long, long time. I remember watching the Devil's Picturebook and immediately adding it to my repertoire. I thought I'd found the holy grail of OOTWs with that technique. It looked and felt so clean and direct. And then I re-read Book 3 of Art of Astonishment. I learned about Paul Harris' Galaxy. I really underestimated it in the past but later realized it couldn't get more direct than that. On top of that-- it was so much effing simpler than any method I'd previously done. It's the showstopper in my card act now. And evidently, there's some added tweaks that make it even stronger in the upcoming TA set. I don't know how that's possible...

But I'm hella looking forward to it.

Thanks cedwards90 . . .

Hi cedwards90,

It's so nice to hear people's experiences with STUCK! I'm always surprised by the people that recognize me in magic shops all over the US just because of STUCK!

Thank you for your review of COSMOS. It's been a while since I released COSMOS and it's always nice to see new magicians discovering this effect.

One of the things that I always planned on including with the original COSMOS release was the COSMOS method applied to performing for ONE spectator. The only difference between one and two spectators is the magician simply plays the role of the other spectator.

Over the last 2 years my life has changed a LOT. I got married to the love of my life and we had our daughter. When I released STUCK! I thought that I would have time to release some of my other effects, but life had a different plan for me. This year I am 100% certain that my new effects will be released . . . so keep an eye on RostamiMagic.com for some exciting new tricks with coins, cards, and a few StRanGe surprises . . .

thanks again,
Greg Rostami
