oh i totally agree with you that some of the best effects use gimmicks, but i like the setting where i can have nothing on me and just walk into a room full of people and just perform miracles at moments notice. i don't want to carry around any special decks, magnets, rings, gimmicked coins or anything of that sort. That is just my personal style.
On the other hand there are also many effects that are impromptu that achieve the same result as effects that use gimmicks. sinful is a great example as there used to be the very same effect which used a gimmick can, but mr. houchin has come up with the same miracle as putting a signed quarter in a soda can impromptu. Catching my drift?
Impromptu is just my name of the game and that's why i'm such a huge fan of wayne houchin, because I feel like his personal style of magic relates to mine. I don't mind effects that use everyday objects for the "gimmick" portion of the effect, but I don't want an effect where i need to have a special "something" to perform the effect.
In no way am I dissing effects where a gimmick is required. By all means if you like it, then that's a plus for you because it gives you the opportunity of have more effects in your arsenal.
Again on a final note, my arsenal consists of quality and not quantity
