I performed the old trick tagged by richard sanders and I had a spectator go up to me and he revealed the whole method and said is that how you do it? I replied, it is whatever you want it to be, it can be magic or trickery, just have fun watching it. He then left with a smile. Was this a good reply?

That doesn't seem like the question he was asking. It's a good answer yes, but for his question, I'd probably just subtly answer "Is that how you'd do it? hmm..."

That is a difficult question to answer and your answer was good, but it kind of implies that the spectator was right. If the question arises again try and make it seem like the spectator still doesn't know or is wrong. Leave that bit of doubt, so they will never know for sure how it was done. Personally I'd probably answer "You could do it that way I guess, but then of course it wouldn't be magic," or "I don't know is it?". The second one will probably make them angry after a while though. :) Anyways thank you for the excellent topic it really got me thinking.

While a good answer, AsherF said it best, it didn't answer the question he was asking.

As for what I usually say, "That would be one way to do it."

Edward Norton uses this one in The Illusionist when the crown prince attempts to figure out one of his tricks. It's one I'm fond of.

I had a similar issue myself today, when one of the spec. gave an explanation of how i did a card effect. Despite giving a "doable" but wrong answer, I just replied by saying:

Me: "So do you think that's how i did it ?"
Spec. : "Yes, am i right ?" (or something similar)
Me : "Maybe ..."
