what are the best books and DVD's to use for learning card magic? Which are better, Books or DVD's.

Welcome to the forums.
Some books, you might want to look into are the Royal Road of Card Magic and the Card College series, the review for which can be found the review here, http://forums.theory11.com/showthread.php?t=651.
You might also want to check out this thread, http://forums.theory11.com/showthread.php?t=889, which is about some useful "Magic Books."
Moreover, you might want to check out some books on magic at the library and just read them.

I'll have to second Royal Road of Card Magic and Card College. With Royal Road, I highly recommend getting the book and the DVD's.
You read the book first, then watch the DVD's. As an educator, I can tell you this is a fantastic way to learn.
Now, that's in learning the basics, a mix of books and complimentary DVD's. Once you are ready to prepare routines? I recommend books. Easier to browse, mark, jump around, etc.

Personally, I love books because they are so under-utilized. I know of several effects that just slay people, but they remain relatively obscure and unknown because they are found in books and not on DVDs (And no, I won't share which books I'm referring to! 
). That alone is reason enough for me to go with books whenever possible.
I have several DVDs that I love as well, but books are just wonderful. Not to mention the incredible value! You could spend about $25-$30 on books, and have enough material to last you a lifetime. On the other hand, some people have trouble learning from a book, and learn much better from a DVD. If that is the case, then I guess the answer as to which you should get is obvious. Having some great books lying around isn't going to help you if you can't learn from them!
