All magic done well requires skills. Skill is measured not only in terms of sleight of hand ability but other aspects such as showmanship, creativity, script, and composition. Gaffs are useless without skills.

"I like the magic from the era of the 1930's because it was all skill and sleights. The magic now seems to have lost all need for skill because it's overrun by gaff-centered tricks. Do you have skill / sleight centered tricks that are a solution to
gaff-centered tricks? What are your thoughts on this?"

As said above,
A good magic trick does not NEED knuckle busting sleights or underground passes.
A good magic trick is one that works. Period. If you can entertain with a magic trick and perform it as intended, then its a good trick.
I have used gaffs many many times and have gotten the greatest of reactions ever.
Sure some sleights can do the same thing as gaffs/ gimmicks can, but sometimes, I ask myself "why bother?" If I need to practice one sleight for weeks just to perform a trick, when there is a easier solution, why not choose it?
I do keep practising my sleights/ moves, but still use gimmicks very often.
Gimmicks/Gaffs are an easier way, but they do not symbolise a novice.
There are also some gaffs which the tricks fails without. For example, show me a gimmickless/ gaffless Distortion. Or how bout an impromptu anniversary waltz?
Sleights give you the awesome feeling of accomplishment when you master a move, gaffs give you the feeling of "holy crap that was easy". I practice shifts and controls till my hands hurt, but still love those gimmicks/ gaffs.
Get what were saying?
Gaffs being a amateur's solution to everything is a horrible misconception. Get over it.

I love hard sleights, and I practiced them a lot, you have no idea how satisfying that is to perform one of your hard practiced sleights and have a great reaction, I mean, yeah gaffs pretty much acomplish the same thing, but I (personally speaking) really really enjoy the rewards of hard work:D

Psychology is everything. the number of moves means nothing to the spectator. I think as magicians we look at knucke busting magic as more "professional" and "true magic". But anyone can learn the secretest pass of all time or the most visual color change ever, but very few can actually setup the audience mentally.

As for me I occasionally use gaffs but never just gaff tricks. I'm in high school and usually perform for the same groups of people everyday. I use my prior performances to lend creditablity to the gaff. The gaffs allow me to perform "impossible magic". Most of what i do is impromptu or just gaff free.

Thing is, one of my good friends is one of the most naturally gifted magicians I know, and a very creative thinker. He started off learning magic through gaffs. Even now, most of his effects uses gaffs.

He also picked up and performed the Cascade Control perfectly in a week (compare with another good friend of mine, who has been working on it for about 4 months and performs it perfectly 95% of the time), and given the opportunity is one of the most technically perfect magicians I know - and owns the grand majority of those beginners pedantically claiming to be "purists".

Which just proves that gaffs does not equal a lack of skill.

LOL! I could not understand it either? I'm guessing that the poster is asking if using gaff cards requires skilled sleight of hand skills.
if you can see the light that i have in mind then you might no what i am doing for me and my name and what the magic has for use all if we use the mind we have . we got time to put back the magic in magic so can see what we got to gave.
