Getting Well For The Gig

Well, being I'm having first hand experience with this at the moment, I figured it'd be a good time to post this.

Lets talk about the entertainer side of magic for a moment instead of the technical stuff. What do you guys do to get well if you are sick before a gig? I am currently blasting myself with vitamins to get over a cold before a huge gig in 4 days.

Again, like I said, this is more of a performer question and I thought it'd be interesting to discuss.

i have a check list,

* I drink two bottles of Gatorade
* take all vitamins
* One allergy pill of your choosing
= Eat one apple and one banana (oranges are bad luck to eat before you preform.
* I Will practice My Finale and i will do it perfect so I won't feel worried

Now These things will help you physically and mentally feel better before you show. I do all of this before my show feeling sick or not. hope it helps, and don't eat an ORANGE!

Some exercise might help. Helps wake me up in the morning if I'm feeling drowsy. I feel energetic and refreshed.

Echinacea <--- Magical Stuff from the land of the unknown.

I had the beginnings of a cold the week before a musical I was doing. Took echinacea twice a day, I had the full on cold for one day and the next it wasn't there.

Works best if you take it as soon as you see the signs of something brewing. :)

Along with what Sean said, gargle with listerine, take Vitamin C, and get lots of rest. You'll be better before ya know it.

Echinacea is very helpful for colds.

The first thing I'd say is, well, don't get sick in the first place (I know this doesn't help you much now, but I'll be brief with a few things). I've been performing on stage for a number of years (as an actor, not a magician), and essentially, your body is your instrument, and your voice especially a huge part of that instrument. From about a month out from a performance I'll start to restrict what I consume. I'll only drink water for the month leading up to the performance, upwards of 2L per day. No coffee, no soft drinks, fast food, etc. Very little chocolate and ice cream (none in the last two weeks). Take special care of weather when going out, bring coats jumpers etc. Even down to never being lazy enough to not bother wearing socks (running on stage with blisters is painful =/). Eat well and sleep well are obvious ones. I'll still go to the gym but I'll ease up a little bit with weights etc.

So if you get sick anyway, which does and will inevitably happen once in a blue moon... Pretty much just drink even more, get a lot of sleep, etc. It may be worth seeing the doctor and telling him that you have a gig in a few days, a deadline you have to be in performable condition for as well. Maybe not for a cold, but in some circumstances you could get something extra in addition to "sleep well drink more". Vitamins are good but obviously make sure they're only supplementing your diet. Plan what foods to eat depending on what you have also (if you need more sugar, more energy in general, etc). Stay active but don't push it also... I had a shocking case of my voice failing the night before a musical... I don't think I've ever drunk so much water in one day in my life.

Back in Time
I usually would drink lots of Orange Juice, take a lot of Coldeeze and some lemon drops.

Colds usually last a week or so for me when I don't take any of that. But after taking those when I feel I have a cold. It went from 7 to 3 days. Still sucks ass having a cold. I couldn't practice or do anything. It was damn near impossible to practice when your nose is running and you have loud thunderous sneezes almost all the time.
