I've always considered a subscription to magazines. So, now I'm wondering what are the different magazines for magic. I would ask which is the best, but that is subjective, so instead I will ask, what are the differences between them? I've purchased a copy of Penguin magic monthly, but to me 10$ is pricey for the amount in it. I think it is better as a freebie. I've also tried a free digital copy of vanishing, and thought it was nice. I want to know the best option before I order anything though.

Genii. Hands down. For $35 a year, there is a ton of stuff each month. It covers cards, coins, parlor, stage and mentalism. That is in addition to the articles and columns that don't teach effects. Worth every penny.

With a subscription you get access to their digital archives going back to 1936. The search engine isn't the best for research, but using the Genii Forum and Cafe, you can typically track down what you need. There are some great posts on those forums for hidden gems.

David,

Do you have any of the add ons and if so how are they? Also, if you do have the add ons, are they monthly payments too?

@Maaz Hasan the add-ons are a separate purchase. So you can get an annual subscription for $35 a year (digital only) or $58 per year (digital and print). Then you can get one of the books for a greatly reduced price - The Vernon Touch (you pay $25 regular price is $85), Tailsman (you pay $15, regular price is $70) or Lost Notebooks of John Hilliard Northern (you pay $15, regular price is $60). I have Tailsman and the Lost Notebooks. Tailsman is a book containing all of a magic periodical called Tailsman that was published in the 1970s. The Lost Notebooks have a really interesting story behind them: http://geniimagazine.com/magicpedia/John_Northern_Hilliard. Hilliard was the author of Greater Magic (an amazing book that was actually published after his death). The Vernon Touch is a collection of Dai Vernon's columns for Genii magazine which are more on presentation of magic than actual effects. So for $50 or $60 you get the year's digital subscription and a book.
