Whatever, no one seems to agree with me lately anyway, I'm just trying to help & be encouraging, but I guess I fell flat on my face on that attempt. So if ya'll wanna criticize what I have to say, & now again, for the SECOND time on these forums, have the way I write be criticized because it's apparently un-readable & you cant understand my posts, go ahead & do whatever makes you feel better, as this thread has now seemed to create more of a pessimistic energy than a positive one, not what I wanted, so I'm done with this topic. I appreciate all the feedback of my posts on this topic from you guys & apologize if I offended anyone with my bad advice & bad forum posting-skills.

Moore notice how everyone breaks up their paragraphs into thoughts so it's easier to read. I'm not sure what grade level you're in and I don't want to lecture you, but nobody is going to read that unless you organize the thing.

Woah, calm down "towtox". And you say that youve been criticized for the SECOND time. I don't know if you noticed but, 2 isn't a really big number. People are speaking the truth and if you're gonna crawl into your little emo corner and complain about it, don't try and make us feel bad about your mistakes. Nobody is saying that you're a terrible forum poster or anything like that. We're just saying that we agree with RealityOne more. That isn't something to make a big deal about.

Moore, nobody is criticizing you personally.

I think what a lot of people are saying is that "creativity is best when it comes from a solid foundation." I didn't take RealityOne's list as literal, but as a way of saying that you should be well read and a real student of the subject before you try to create. Certainly, someone might come up with something new and novel without a solid grounding, but it's far more likely that a great mind for magic will be formed after a great understanding of magic is formed. I think it would produce better magic and better magicians if we encouraged more learning through imitation to begin with, and less creativity and originality for its own sake.

We're all trying to give good, solid advice; I was helped out a lot by others (and still am), and I feel I really ought to give others the best advice I can. I don't doubt for a moment that you feel the same way.

Why not say something more positive like "Oh, so you want to create a trick? That's awesome! I would recommend you read this & that, watch this magician, hone your performing skills, also focus on performing etc etc etc., & good luck!"

Because chances are nobody would pay attention to what was said after "That's awesome." I could have been more positive, but my first post was designed to get people's attention and make them think about what I was saying. My second post was designed to explain why I was saying what I said in my first post.

I'm just trying to help & be encouraging...

Help and encouragement are good. I agree that people need to be more creative in their magic and I like your idea about helping people develop their skill at being creative - but that doesn't mean they have to focus on trying to create new effects.

In that vein Beans was trying to help you. If your posts are easier on the eyes, more people will read them.

So, if I were you I'd conjure up what dignity I have left, dry the tears, and give Reality credit for making a very valid point and admit that he might know something a little better than you do.

That's unnecessary. Once I explained myself, Moore acknowledged what I was saying and I've acknowledged the points he made that I thought were valid. Its only through disagreeing and pushing each other to examine and explain our ideas that we learn.

Ok guys, I didnt mean for this thread to become a debate one, I simply wished to hear other magicians ideas on the subject of creativity, your own ideas, whatever you made that seperates you from the average CA clone. In response to this debate on creativity vs. performing, I create about 75 percent of all the magic I perform (mostly cards) and I perform it almost daily at my local high school, this teaches me, 1. how to interact with an audience (unruly or otherwise) 2. what jokes to use, and which ones to not use 3.How to perform the tricks to get maximum effect, instead of a lukewarm response. I could go on and on and on, until someone tracked me down and shot me just to stop the spamming. In my opinion, all magicians who create should have experience in magic yes, but if a great idea strikes them early on AND they perfect (or as close as they can get to perfecting) it, who are we other magicians to stop them? I do agree that the focus in magic has shifted from impressing the audience to impressing magicians, and I do agree that it is a bad thing, buuuuuuuuuuuut one should develop ones own routines because, even a layperson can spot a CA clone.
So please stop debating or arguing or whatever you wanna call it, just share your honest ideas not just about creating, but about the stuff you yourself have created, innovated, want to create, or even seen and thought original.
I wish you all the most prosperous of lives and that good fortune will await you soon, magical or otherwise
