So ive just made a blood deck by daniel madison and wonder about peoples thoughts on marked decks. I find that they have quite a bit of uses. Madisons 7 Crows goes very well with the deck.

i havent made the advocate yet. i accidentally used the wrong marking system this time. its bloody awful. i used the one in the middle on the back of some bikes. i shouldve done the corners. I wanted madisons special edition of Inside but couldnt get one. Pyscho finally came out.

I've been working with a marked deck for 4 or 5 months and haven't regretted any of it. Learning how to effectively hide the method through structure and presentation is the real key to marked decks, because looking at a marking and saying the card aloud is both the worst and best trick you can do.

It's the worst because it can be transparent, the best because it's simple and direct.

And thanks for the tip of Psycho (hadn't noticed it was out) and am downloading now :). (it's cheaper than it seems with the amount of psychological forces...hmmm)

I use a lot of marked decks but not for anything like most people.

I personally think that the worst effect you can do with a marked deck is a classic forcesque.

If I am working I usally use either a reverse stacked marked deck.

This is true, but who said you had to have a selection in the most-used sense of the term. I know that you're a mentalist so you wouldn't use it the same as a magician but I've developed a presentation around Pete McCabes 'Echoes' trick, which is in his book Scripting Magic, the presentation draws the audience in deep enough to not care about the method and has a few 'misses' which help to verify the claims.

I do use the marks as some magicians do in terms of 'forcing' every card, if I lose it(accidentally, not often anymore...but it happens) I can do an ID without asking what the card was before showing one card face down in a face up deck.

I also put touch markings on my aces so I can cut to them at will from spectator shuffled deck. :)

Agreed. Those two tools make up a majority of my repertoire.

I personally mark both, makes it easy to read and use at any point. Psycho is also very good, I bought it this weekend. Not traditional magic, per se, and the effects are sort of unconventional, but I'd still say worth it. It also has a version of the "Pair" trick.

how many lay people really know what a marked deck is or looks like?

so if you said, shuffle if you want, and go through all the cards, find one you like. place it on the table.. as she/he is placing it on the table, glance at the "mark" and you never have to look at the card again.. then go into whatever presentation that you want...

layman will eat that up..

like it or not, it can be a strong piece of magic

and thats just the basics of it all
