I don't know how legal copyright things work, but The Wire says don't use music that you don't have permission to use. does that mean verbal permission or written? im kind of confused on this whole thing.

Just search Google for "Royalty Free Music" and you should be good. Royalty free means that there are no copyrights on the works of the artist. One common website is Kevin Macleod's site
