A control is a method of controlling one or more cards to a specific position within a deck. For example, an overhand shuffle can be used to control a card inserted in the middle of a deck to the top or the bottom of the deck (or second from the top or second from the bottom if you would like). The book Royal Road to Card Magic explains the overhand shuffle control as well as other controls.

A pass is a method for moving one half of the deck above the other half without the spectator noticing. It was invented to reverse a cut of the deck. The pass can be used to control a card if that card is placed on top of the lower half of the deck. That is, when you pass the lower half above the upper half, the top card on the lower half becomes the top card of the deck.
