The short answer is to make your magic entertaining through the use of character and presentation. The long answer is, well, long. Rather than give you an essay, let's make this practical and develop your character and then come up with compelling presentations for the effects you like to do.
Write a paragraph describing your performance character and then list several of your favorite effects to perform. To give you an idea of what I'm looking for, let me describe my character:
I believe in the magic that is part of our lives. Maybe I see things that other people don't. I want to make my audienc see what I see. To me a magic show is about play - you remember being a child and using your imagination and playing? Take my hand and let me lead you into my world. Let me tell you a story in a way that makes the magic real. I like to make the audience laugh at my humor and yes, sometimes groan at my puns. I am an intellectual but at the same time I am aware of human nature and my magic lies at the intersection of what we know, what we believe, what we feel and what is impossible. When I perform, I feel that I am larger than life, that there is a twinkle in my eyes, a smile on my face and an energy or even a magical aura around me. I invite my audience to come with me and surrender to their imagination and remember what it is like to play if just for a little while.
So think about and type up a paragraph on your character. Then list some of your favorite effects and give a brief summary of what you say when you perform those effects. I will work with you to put your character and presentation together.
Finally, tell me two of your favorite movies, three of your favorite books, your favorite pizza, your favorite superhero and four of your favorite songs. Oh, and if you were a movie character, who would you be? This will let me get to know what you like and don't like -- because what works for me may not come even close to working for you.
