Sorry. Have not been at the computer. The problem comes with how does one define a "sandwich" effect. Is it enough that three cards are used? What has to happen to the middle card in order for it to be a "sandwich effect?" In some sense the flap three card monte is a sandwich effect, no?
But, all that aside:
Farelli published a trick called "The Sandwich" in 1934 (Farrelli's Card Magic) which may be the first time the term and patter were used. But this was based on an idea of Tom Seller's published in Seller's Secret's (1931). After, the term got picked up an applied to other tricks.
However, according to Whaley, the credit belongs to Louis Christianer for his "The Obedient Card" published in The Magic Wand in 1927. (I have a lot of these original issues but they are not accessible at the moment. Later, in 1927 Jack Merlin released "The Royal Finders."
While this will get you started, the real person you need to ask is Dennis Behr.
Regardless, you should seek out these sources and test them for yourselves. How knows, you might discover something great.
