The Same Old Thread

This has been done alot before so I think it should become a thread to where everyone posts their set lists and have them critiqued. So if anyone wants to partake then have at it.

I'm going to the local mall on tuesday with a buddy and this is my set list so far:

Shudder -DC
Power Word: Fall - MSconce
Spin - MSconce
The Devils' Workers - Mine
Ghostly Card - The Gambit
13 - Mine
The Father Figure - d+M (modified)

As far as your set lust goes there is too much going on. I know that you want to perform mentalism but in my opinion you are not doing it as effectivly as you could be. I mean everything that you are doing are great effects however there is no continuity between them. The first half of your set is very PK heavy but towards the end you have things that seem to be based on predictions. The problem I am seeing you are trying to do a bit of everything and unfortunaly missing out on doing a few things well.

Thanks for the criticism. I'll try to work on it. The reason I didn't make the list flow was because I didn't plan on doing more than one effect for one person. I just wanted to get some experience with street magic before delving into creating a full blown routine.

It does not need to only flow from item to item, but each effect should be consistant with your character.

I have no idea about your character so I cannot really comment on it. If you look at Derren and his chracter you can see that PK effects would not really feel his 'abilities'.

True true. I love mentalism and what not but sometimes I like the visual side of it.
I've always dressed like a rocker without the band t-shirts. Tight jeans and lots of rings and what not. I'm not goth. Well, I didn't want to change the way I dressed to do certain things and couldn't see my self doing effects like Simple Triumph or something like that so I came up with a character that seemed to possess abilities with his mind that others do not have. I've always been the "loner" type so I figured, Why not a loner with extraordinary abilities? And then I delved into Pk and Mentalism. Normal card magic just didn't seem to fit into the repertoire of the character I wanted.

So what are your 'powers' and what is the source of them. I know this is very blunt but it is a good lesson for anyone who wants to truly progress in mentalism. For example my power is that I am a watcher and through years of watching people I can pick up on their thoughts. And from that I have learnt to say or do certain things to get them to think of what I want them too. Whilst this is rarely verbalized like this it comes across in my show. So whilst I do a lot of mentalism certain aspects like metal bending do not fit my character.

Metal Bending wouldn't fit well either. I truly haven't thought about source. It might be a good idea to work on that though.
