Hello everyone. I hope you are all having a awesome summer :) I have been thinking of recording some flourishes and magic tricks of mine and putting it on The Wire. Can anyone give me some tips on making the video? I know one thing is to talk in the tutorial lol I am not a fan of just having subtitles in the tutorial but that is just me. But I would just like some tips and what not to do would be very appreciated by me and any other future Wire releases from beginners :D

what not to do

Well the first thing not to do would be to release a half-assed move that you haven't refined in the crucible of live performance for at the very least about a year, give or take a few months.

Second would be to submit it without ever asking yourself what the point is. If it's a vanity project, go in knowing that there's a pretty good chance of rejection since this isn't a company that publishes a lot of vanity projects. If you actually intend for people to use this in performance, then who specifically is going to use it? Who would buy this?

Third thing not to do would be to assume like so many other people here that you're too good to read this and learn a thing or two about digital video.

Steerpike nailed most of the points, yes. I would also advise that you show your face. I didn't quite understand that bit of advice when I was starting to release material into the community, but it's so important to establish yourself as an artist instead of just the man doing the move. Show your face, use your name, be a person. Otherwise, people just can't connect to you and it can be incredibly difficult to keep a fanbase going. First impressions are crucial, so try to get off on the right foot with your audience. Good luck with everything

yeah I wasn't entirely sure why showing your face was important but now that I think about it, it is pretty important. Thanks everyone for the tips :)

I don't understand why someone would make a video and not show himself. I personally find it somewhat aggravating to watch a video and all I see are the person's hands and hear a disembodied voice. Is it a lack of confidence? Trying to hide something? Probably neither, but it makes one wonder. I agree with Patrick--give the viewer something to latch onto and identify with.

Well, in both of my downloads my face isn't shown... That doesn't mean I have something to hide or whatever, it just means that I am quite shy and I always try not to appear a lot on the internet. But now that I've read what Patrick has written, I'll consider to take it into account in future downloads, it's actually a good point.

Venom, I advise you to write an outline of your project before you start to record, it will help you a lot! And also try to find someone who can help you, someone behind the camera that will make sure the angle and zoom are OK. Record more than one take, find an app that will enable you to edit the raw footage properly (I personally love FCPX, but it is quite expensive... iMovie is great if you hace a mac) and make it look quite natural, don't apply lots of effects and filters, it distracts a lot. Finally, be honest! Don't record a trick and heavily edit it in order to hide the sleight of hand you may use just to make it look better or more decieving.

I hope this can help you a bit at least :)
