In my opinion, DVDs are great for when you want specific effects, while books are great for when you want a wide range of techniques.
It all depends on what you're looking for.
And there are a ton of outliers to this. There are certainly some great DVDs that will teach you the basics of everything, but you are going to have to be much more specific on what you are looking for.
