I don't think there is a definitive reason as to why. But I assume it's the same reason that there are few women hockey players, etc. It wasn't long ago that women weren't all that respected (thank god they are now).
Also, women in magic were often portrayed as the assistants and had trouble breaking free from that stereotype.
Hopefully things will change.
