Why did Jerry's Nuggets go out of print?

i could be wrong but its my understanding that they were a deck used by a certain casino. after that casino went out of business our stopped carrying them they were no longer made. also i believe that they were printed with a method that is no longer used. This gives them a different feel and quality. I could be wrong and please correct me if i am other members. for more info check this link out. CLICK ME google and wikipedia are your friends
Funny you ask...we are just having a civil and intellectual discussion in another thread about this exact same thing..lol!
The answer is that they stopped printing them because they were and are just cards. They weren't meant to be great back then any more than they are today.
Basically, the Black Ghost Deck are the modern day version of Jerry Nuggets. When E stopped making them and everyone said they were the best cards EVER!!....a deck went on eBay for $250 or more. Now it's $6.95.
Jerry's were used by historic and great magicians so people think they must be great. But those magicians used them back then because they were cheap...not because they were awesome cards.
Today, with popular magicians and great creators such as Lee Asher, the Buck Twins, and Chris Kenner using these cards...the hype just grows. Even Wayne used it on his 1 on 1.
The difference is..these artists don't pay $150 per deck for their Jerrys. That type of moronic behavior is reserved for the little kids who think a hyped deck will give them the credibility that they can't earn on their own. You know..the same ones who bid $200 for a Black Ghost deck about a year ago. Imagine how they feel now!

Here is the real history - years ago Jerry's Nugget Casino wanted to move the playing cards in their gift shop - they were selling for a nickel a piece - Lee Asher bought enough to build a bomb shelter out of, as he was going to use them as practice cards. He used them in a few videos, and people wanted to own (what at that time) was one of the only different deck you could get your hands on.
Asher was no fool - he started to sell them. The market dictated the value - as it even says at the official JN card website:

Because it's a seller's market, the deck is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Like any great investment, what might have once seemed to be a premium price, turned out to be a smart buy. Classic Jerry's Nugget playing cards have only continued to increase in value.
For example, look at a recent playing card Ebay auction where the decks sold for over a grand; making it the most desirable playing cards in the world. We feel confident in making one prediction about the price of Classic Jerry's Nugget playing cards - it's going to be higher tomorrow than it is today.
For as long as I have been friends with Lee, he has been using and distributing these cards...however, no good thing last forever. In the near future as it says on the site - the stock is dwindlig - these cards will not be readily sold...this makes them very rare...unless you can convince someone to part with them.
Again - you are mistaken on the Black Ghost's - 1st edition still has value - you are talking about second edition.
Baller08 is right about one thing...Asher did buy them because they were cheap...many have used them just because they were not really "worth" anything - however, one man's garbage becomes another man's treasure - this attitude is why they are so hard to get now. Personally, I really like the way Nuggets handle - they last a long time and don't clump like new novelty decks do over use.
Baller08 is also right to say that many don't pay $150 dollar for their decks...but University Prof's don't pay for their books or learning material either...but students pay tutitoin and book expenses to take part in that membership. Don't tell me that you aren't just paying for membership either, because EDUCATION is as easy a library card - you are paying for your degree.
Similarily - those that are paying 150 bucks are paying for the right to own something that is used by those we consider talent in magic.
So - yes they are rare - yes it is part of our history because of the status of them - I am not sure many kids believe that it will "make their magic better" or "they will be taken more seriously" - I think it has to do with owning something that not everyone has - sure, and if that is hype to you - fine - but baller08 - why so negative - why are you so emotinally vested in this?
The real issue is - you are not educated on this topic - and you have little understanding of what creates the value of this deck - versus other novelty decks...which you obviously have no knowledge of either.

Alrighty, so this is how the story goes..
Back in the day (still not sure when) the Jerry's Nugget Casino had a run of decks printed by the USPCC for use in their Casino. They were made on the old roller machines, unlike the newer monsters at the USPCC.
The cards were printed with a near solid back (Which is frowned upon in the casino industry)
Solid backs aren't the greatest ideas, paired with rigid stock the backs become chipped and marked VERY easily. The casino soon realized this.
Due to the ease of cheating and a new method for printing the casino scrapped their lot and had newer, more modern decks printed.
Now what to do with the old decks?
The casino wanted to get rid of the decks. So bad to the point that they were practically giving them away at 25 cents a deck. Thats when many magicians began using them. Cheap decks are a nice thing to have around, especially if you're working and are blowing through deck after deck.
So why don't they just reprint them?
Well number one, they just don't have the machines around to do it.
Sure we could recreate the machines, imitate the stock, and try to duplicate the finish, but in the end it just wouldn't be worth it. The amount of money it would take to do all that wouldn't even come close to the profit from the decks themselves.
The magician market for the decks would be so small compared to others its just not a bright idea.
And number two, these decks are like wine. They get better with age. The face that tons of these decks have been stacked away for years has conditioned them the way they are. No machine can recreate that.
So in the end, it would take tons of money and quite a few years to recreate the decks.
It just wouldn't make sense for anyone to go through with that.

Yea I like both of their comments on this one. Baller just was stating stupid stuff but then again it wasn't supposed to be taken that seriously. I truly don't believe that Morgician realizes that Baller is laughing at this message thinking that he made it so proper. I believe that if a famous magician uses a cheap deck then I see no reason why the deck should also be famous. If WH took a dump in a certain toilet and was discontinued then should you pay an excessive amount of money to take a crap in something when a similar product does it equally well or even better? Just something to think about it, and if you couldn't tell, I hate art and paying money for it is a waste. (Charity anybody?)

Magic is an art in some respects, some of the stuff you do with cards can be classified as that but to me I don't label magic under the category of art. Just my personal opinion, it's hard to say when I con people into my trick that it becomes an art.

LOL LOL! I really laughed out loud when I first read that. That's too funny...yet so simple and true. However, that is exactly what most people are doing with drolling over the Jerrys.
Like I said to Morgician, the owners of a large quantity of Jerry's...they're the smart ones.....it's the kids (or adults) who can barely pay their cell phone bill but is shelling out $200 for a deck of cards because they think it gives them some bragging rights...those are the people that I was talking about.
PS: You should send Wayne your post....I think he'll get a huge laugh out of it. He seems to have a really good sense of humor.
PSS: Who many times does Morgician mention Lee Asher in his post?
