Anthony here to review the well-liked trick "Box Monster" By: Nathan Kranzo.
Effect: The spectator selects two cards out of the deck-- there are no forces. With no funny moves, the cards are placed back in the center of the deck. The deck is then placed back into the box. The box is closed. Nothin' fancy. Yet.
With no false motions, the card box visibly opens itself and one card is seen to slowly, visibly rise up out of the deck. Your hand grips the card gently, then pulls it out of the deck. The card is slowly turned over-- done. You've nailed card number one.
The cards are then held in your hands. The spectators eyes are fixed on your hands like a hawk. You bring the cards down to the table and begin to spread the cards slowly from right to left.
One card begins to slowly move out of the spread, towards the spectator -- while on the table. You've never seen anything like this. And your spectators haven't either-- it's downright eerie.
Review:
So I received my package, and was very pleased with how Box Monster was performed. It is fairly easy, and the gimmick is never seen. After the DVD was over, and a few times on the gimmick, I had it set, and without practicing, I performed it on my mom. I performed it flawlessly the first time, its that easy! I now perform this as my closer to many of my card routines. I then go to something like "Control" by: Wayne Houchin. [Pulse Stops]
[Story]
I was performing a walk around show at a party where their was about 150+ people. I walked up to a few people, started with ACR routine, when into 2 card monte, went into Indecent, then into box monster. Wow! After indecent, people knew I was "magical". They thought it was all over, I was given hugs, nice to meet you *shakes hand* stuff like that. Then I said, "Since you guys have been a nice crowd, I will show you guys something truly magical, that I have been working on for a long time" [At this point I usually go into Control by Wayne Houchin, but i decided to go for box monster] When that last card came out, and they checked the deck, people flipped out, and I got booked for 2 partys! This is a trick people will remember!
The Gimmick
The gimmick is very clever. It is also very easy to use... once made that is. You have to do something to your gimmick so its ready to use in performance, and it becomes very frustrating on your first try. The gimmick(s) provided with should last for a very long time, but depending on the person it may go by faster, so I would suggest if you are buying this to pick up a refill. Overall I like the gimmick and how it is used to make this effect, though it would be nice if they were premade - 7/10
The DvD
To me personally, Nate Kranzo can be a bore. Maybe that's just because I am used to Daniel Garcia and Wayne houchin, but he kinda bored me. Nevertheless, he is a great teacher. He went over every aspect of this trick, and by the end I had no questions. There is 4 performances I think, which I like because watching his performances help me on mine. The quality of the DvD is great, and the artwork makes me drool. Overall I really liked this DvD, the trick was taught in percise detail - 8/10
The Method
I really like the way this is performed. Everything is so easy and visual, and the spectators never see a thing. The only thing I don't like to do is turn around to setup. I don't mind because nobody notices anything as they think I just don't want to see their cards, but It would be cooler if I didn't have to turn. I actually made up a version to where its preset, but if I am using it as a closer, then I have to have 2 decks, in which one its already setup.Overall I don't think the method could be any better, besides me having to turn around - 8/10
Reactions
People will scream, stare, and may even drool from their mouth being opened to long. This effect will be burned into their heads, and they will be talking about it for a long time to come. The reactions from this trick is great! - 9/10
***Remember*** TO GET GOOD REACTIONS, PERFORMANCE AND SHOWMANSHIP MUST BE THERE, IF YOU JUST DO THE TRICK, ITS FOR NOTHING
Overall
This trick is one trick to put on your list. It is amazing, it gets reactions, and it is easy to perform. I say put this near the top of your list! - 8/10
