Before You Ask . . .

Maybe it's because I'm an old curmudgeon or perhaps it's the Virgo in me that recognizes the idea that everything has its place . . . then again, it could simply be the fact that I do lots of research. Regardless, I am of the mind to scream a bit here and there when it comes to the lethargy of some and their refusal to use a search engine in order to find answers be it Google or the Search function within a forum. Then again, this is one of those things that require the application of common sense which is a rare bird now days (heard that Congress is thinking of placing it on the endangered species list).

The point of this rant is a simple one; STOP BEING SO F-ING LAZY!

If you have questions about an effect do a search on every forum you belong to and then some. As much as I loathe the place, the Magic Cafe does have some fairly decent reviews on material, especially new releases. You will likewise find some decent leads when it comes to the history associated with an effect. Though I've not been able to get back there in some time there are two Magic Wiki sites that have a significant amount of information on them. I'm a hint biased in that I'm one of the chief contributors there, but that doesn't negate the fact that you can find answers on these sites (links deliberately not included because the sites are still under construction. They can be found via a search however).

Another thing you can do when it comes to a particular release is track down and speak directly to the effect creator, I do this weekly when it comes to reviewing things. These guys aren't gods, they put on their pants the same way you do so stop it with the star-struck hesitation. Even Max Maven will answer questions when they come from a person he knows to be serious about the craft and not some kid trying to waste his time with elementary questioning they can find in foundation books like Corinda.

The point is a simple one, you will come off as being brighter and more serious about LEARNING if you aren't wasting everyone's time asking inane questions that can be easily looked up. When you want to know where to find something, do a search! I can't count the number of times Draven, R1, myself and others have responded to such posts with a list of google results that the OP never even attempted to look up . . . otherwise we'd never seen the question in the first place.

HINT: We live in the information age because we can generally find out about anything via the internet. So stop being so freak'n lazy and learn to use the tools you have. If you're too lazy to do this then god help you when it comes to actually learning magic or how to be a proper showman -- no one, not even a Mentor, is going to hold your hand throughout the process, sooner or later you have to do it on your own and claim your own personal power by letting go of the lethargy.

end of rant

Ummm, like i wuld likes to, ya know, add to ur post about like the realyz bad grammers and speling that sum peeps use on this here forums!!!one!!!one!!

The above sentence was probably annoying to read and even more difficult to take seriously. I see all the time one or two sentence posts where the author couldn't take 10 seconds to proofread the post before clicking submit. Constantly, I see long run on sentences, lowercase "i" and even "uummm" actually typed out! This all stems from laziness which is the point of this thread. Simple things like spelling, grammar and actually taking a few seconds to read what you type, will help you to be taken more seriously.

The District
Moderators, can we get this as a sticky for the top of the forum?
Perhaps newcomers will see it and learn to help themselves first. =)

Forums are a great place to ask intelligent questions and generate intelligent discussion. "Intelligent" is the key word.

I think the problem is, that people do actually try to research. But don't come up with sufficient information. The fact that you can find 'anything' on google or the internet isn't true. As many magicians keep an effect between fellow magicians (good friends). So posting on the forum may be there way of asking if you know of any low key effects like the one shown.

As far as the comment raised about bad grammar, that is completely true. They are lazy and don't live in the 'real' world per-say. Although they will learn better in the future.

Although good job on the post. People do need to do more research then they actually do. Many actually don't even try.

Then again the main purposes of forums (what they are mostly used for on any website) are question and answer no matter how stupid the question may seem that's what they are for.

Reputation matters. If the only thing associated with you is tons of posts on forums asking about stuff that anyone who's done twenty minutes of research should know, you'll be labelled as incompetent by those who appreciate the drive to research. If the people behind the scenes think you're incompetent, you won't be allowed to find those little niches that hold the really interesting information. Magic is very socially-driven. The reasons the 'low key' effects aren't out there is because people don't put them out there. They only share them with those other people who have put in the work and proven that they really care and want to do whatever effect it is as best as possible.

I suspect that very few magicians really appreciate the idea of the social aspects of this world.

Incorrect. The main purpose of the forums is to provide a social outlet for those who would otherwise not have the likely chance to communicate with each other.

I'm here to help you, but I'm not goin to do all the work For you.

Admittedly my post stems from general Old Fart Frustration . . . I'm on a half-dozen forums and I see this sort of inane action far too much (along side the poor grammar & spelling, which is a huge issue given that fact that Firefox and I'm certain IE have those wonderful red & green highlights to warn you of such problems). But yes, LAZINESS is the larger portion of the issue and it seems to be moving into a catastrophic level of infestation.

How hard is it to type in "Thumb Tips + Magic" in a search engine. . . even Bing can find it for you.

This can be done with most any effect or even the name of a mage . . . that wants to be found; there are ways by which some folks pay big money to stay un-accessible.

Yes, many of us are going underground and keeping secrets SECRET rather than rushing out and publishing a brain fart in hopes of fortune & fame. This is the direction Magic really needs to go in that the commercialism is killing the craft; the more we allow to be marketed on any level, the fewer actual secrets we have to work with. . . and I make no apology to the newbie that thinks he/she has the "right" to know such things -- THEY DON'T! Until that individual has earned your favor in some way, which includes the development of their skill & knowledge level, you owe them nothing! More so, the magic fraternity as a whole owes them nothing until they have proved their skills and ability . . . we've gotten away from that tradition and as the end result we've created this greedy but lazy "brain trust" that constantly asks things they can easily find. . .

Ever notice how many links I sew into certain posts?

A lot of times I look those things up while I'm typing out the post itself. There was one kid (who actually inspired this rant) that was asking about something and I gave him about a half-dozen links that were all on the first page of a google search. I was rather blunt in pointing out how easy it was to get that information in hopes of inspiring the lad to get off his duff and apply himself a bit . . .

This thread has become a bit "tainted" but I do believe a sticky as well as a message to all new members that emphasize the use of search engines, grammar & spell checks. I don't want to see us with a Grammar Gestapo such as we have at the green place, that's too fanatical. But, magicians are supposed to be well rounded & educated individuals that prize knowledge and dignity above all other things, we really need to encourage that idea and bring some class back into the process, don't you think?
