Cerca Trova Forum - New Location / Explanation

Has the time limitation on the forum been dropped? I've always thought it was a fantastic idea, but with threads only open for three days--and those days being ones I tend not to be at the computer--I gave up on ever participating. If so, that's great, and I'll be right over.

    Anonymous: "The Next Clue"

"The next clue is already in your hands. More details will soon follow." Magicman123-2: have you checked the battery or the SIM card in the phone by any chance? For, like, another letter, perhaps?

You know nothing until you've read this!

What fantastic article. I had a copy of Cards as Weapons long ago, but that was well before I even considered anything like sleight of hand. (I was actually interested in the title subject.) The article raises some really interesting questions. For example, how much sense does it make to talk...

    Pen Spinning Material...

Just, you know . . . avoid fountain pens. Some gel or liquid ink pens will leak from the centrifugal force as well. Try it slowly, then write with it. If it looks like more ink is flowing all of a sudden, you might want to be careful with that pen. Been there, done that, paid the dry cleaning bill.

    New Practice Regimen

(And if, by the way, this isn't helpful, is too far off the mark, or is getting too specific to be of use to the forums, feel free to let me know and I'll stifle it. So far it seems like Badger is facing some fairly common issues, but at some point this might be handled better over PM.)

    New Practice Regimen

Good for you for going out and doing it. It's also great that you're taking the time to think through what happened rather than just chalking it up to "I sucked" or "dumb audience." It's usually more complex than that. I think you got a real nugget of wisdom there: Context Matters. Where...

    New Practice Regimen

Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good, Badger. Looks like you've had a rough couple of days, and are in the process of recalibrating what you expect out of this process. That's totally cool--if you didn't do a little check partway through, I'd be worried. But I will push you a...

    The Too Perfect Theory: Wrong?

Discussing sleights of hand can also be a great way of using an audience's logic against it. It's Magician's Judo, in a sense. The audience's logic is the knot the magician is trying to slip through--and the magician has to know, going in, how tight that knot is. If it's an audience of kids...

    The Phone Has Chimed (again)

Yup--I think whoever suggested that the answer is somewhere inside the phone is dead on. It is probably: --in the contacts, saved numbers, outbox text messages, or other software components; --on the SIM card; or --physically inside the phone, such as folded under the battery or in another...

    My Package From Anonymous

Make sure the phone is charged! And while you're at it, check through the stored numbers and stuff. Might be useful. Or just funny. But hey, no pressure. ;)

    BULLETIN : andthensome +YOURSTUFF Contest

Well, it sort of is, actually--here's how . . . . If the move is good enough for Dan & Dave, the move is good enough to sell independently. (Probably. this is arguable too, but let's set it aside.) But when a company like Theory11, D&D, or Ellusionist is producing a DVD, they're selling...

    Magic is annoying me...

Do you perform for the same people repeatedly? If you do, then they might be taking you for granted--as a "performance monkey," as cm763 put it. Alternatively, they are learning to watch you critically. Think of it this way: When you do magic, you are challenging your audience in a...

Saturday Night Contest - I Am Anonymous

It is conceivable, you know, that it could be Daniel Madison with a haircut. Yes, a Theory 11 Artist, but not like you've ever seen him before . . . . (Except for that whole "born in America" thing.)

    Magic and Horror Films

Interesting comparison. Fundamentally, I think you're on to something. Both magic and horror are (often) about a very similar theme: "ordinary" people coming into contact with something "unreal" or "supernatural." Stephen King, I think it was, subdivided the broad category of horror into...

Totally Out of Control - Better left unreplicated?

(Long-time reader, first time poster. But this conversation really struck me as interesting.) There are a couple of different things going on that I agree with in praetoritevong's original post and response to Jon Raiker, but I do actually want to give an argument for why releasing the book...
