    Restaurant and Party Gig yesterday

A bit of common sense will tell you that the best time to approach a table is like right after they've ordered their food or when the staff brought them their drinks. Also, I would suggest not bringing up magic when you first approach a table. Try building rapport with them BEFORE you even...

    Anti-Social Spectators

You need to look at it from a logical point of view. You are in a clothing store and you went to bother people who were shopping. So of course they are going to act a bit awkward towards you. They just want to shop and then go home. You need to leave the magic at home sometimes (and this was one...

    Scripting Notation

Everybody scripts their routines differently. I tend to have what I say in quotes and what the audience sees (as well as minor actions and movements) in italics. But that's pretty much it.

Are you excited for the release of?

Boy, Am i!? Actually no. No I am not. It's just a deck of cards and really I don't see much difference besides the back design on it than any other spectator. Though the only decks I buy now days are the Richard Turner Gold Seal deck and that is mainly due to them lasting nearly a life time.

    Presentation vs. the actual effect

Coin Matrix is a boring effect that not many guys can do any justice to. I still say that Presentation and Effect have to go together. And I know a ton of top thinkers and performers would agree with that.

    Magic Can be Art

Art is a very subjective term and can vary from person to the other. Andy Warhol made a giant painting of a soup can into art. Personally, I think we should stop trying to make our audiences see what we do as art, but more as magic. IE: it should appear that it took no effort or skill to make...

    Cards for table work?

Reading is good for and often better than spending money on a DVD. Also you are not going to find any DVD's for 12 or 18 pounds. So save your money and just save up for the things that I mentioned. It will help you out a lot better in the long run.

    Just an idea. Corner restoration

Jeff Prace has an effect that is pretty much exactly the same.

    Cards for table work?

If you can find it and have the money. I would suggest either Darwin Ortiz Annoted Erdnase or Dai Vernon's Revelation(s) book. Both are much better than just the standard Expert at the Card Table, primarely because they do address a few of the issues that are in Erdnase and also most of them...

Erdnase's Two Handed Shift (Getting the pinky in)

The Pass is best used with lots of Direction of attention else where (as Tommy Wonder would say). Also, Erdnase would often say to change the moment that you do the move. One other thing is that you should focus less on speed right now, and focus more on technique and smoothness. The speed will...

Erdnase's Two Handed Shift (Getting the pinky in)

You would be better off learning it from an actual mentor/teacher than the book. While the book itself is great, it can be a bit hard to understand at times. I know Jason England has a download that teaches it and I know most people say that Richard Kaufmen has a really good DVD on the pass.

Mysterium - A New Series by Jason England

I think it would be great if he talked about things like Direction of attention and timing, and how to properly use those two techniques to get away with doing bold or not so bold things.

Is Magic an Art? Thread #459

Is it an art? Maybe.. But it is a craft, and one thing my mentor has constantly told me is that this or any craft. There is no finish line, and one you can allow yourself to deal with that.. Then you'll learn how to fly.

    I hate "normal" things

Don't think about a pink elephant. The way I have been taught to make something "normal" is to pay no attention to it. If I don't want you looking the deck of cards in my hand, I simply drop left hand to the side and focus all of my attention on something else (usually the card I am holding in...

Doing some walk around next month - help!

It depends on how you present the routine and who you ask. The main thing to remember is that people do not remember the entire routine. They will ALWAYS remember the end. Which is why when you do something like a ACR and have it be 12 phases, that you are just confusing and annoying people...

As a 14 year old, where can you start doing shows?

At your age the public library would most likely the ideal place to get some experience. Most of the other places that would pay you, would most likely not take you seriously at all due to your age. But I could see you getting some good experience at the Library or a church fair or maybe the...

    Thoughts on New Business Card!

I think you need two business cards. One that is pretty much a decent normal esqe business card that you hand out to people who ask for it. And another one that has a thicker stock and maybe a more professional/simpler design that is harder to manipulate.

Card "magic" tricks vs sleight of hand

You are going to have to come to realization that some really good plots in magic don't have to "Blur the line" a lot of times it's just a neat, fun thing to show people. The only thing I would say that you steer clear from is any type of plot or effect that comes off like a puzzle.

Card "magic" tricks vs sleight of hand

There is nothing wrong with a good card trick or stunt. Eugene Burger does a few quick tricks in his sets, even people seem to think he is all about making magic some deep thought provoking story. It is all about character and rapport with your audience.
