What magic books should I get? (Beginner)

I agree with both Casey's suggestions. Good point. The five volume Card College series is complete and would replace Royal Road, Expert Card Technique and Expert at the Card Table. I'd add Scarne on Card Tricks (all self-working) and Encyclopedia of Card Tricks (self working and gaffs).

    Magic presentations by age

At first it was just the black and white version, but when I was seven, we were the first family in the caves to get the newfangled color version. That and the three-stone monte. That was only after my first version, mud of the forest, didn't work out too well.

    Common Theme?

I'm curious as to which books you are reading... that may help with the answer. So, there are two different meanings for the word "routine." One is a series of phases of an effect using the same props. Think about an Ambitious Card routine, a Cups & Balls Routine, a Coin Matrix routine or a...

    Lean Travellers (trick)

I think that just the three card count would work. You're making me pull out Jennings '67 and Art of Astonishment to look at the variations on Travelers / Invisible Palm.

    Help on a Beginner's Routine

I like the idea, but I'm not sure that this is the effect for it. The discongruence here is that in this effect you are not a player. I get that putting up the dollar and then the car make you have skin in the game, but the problem is that there is no upside for you. No chance for you to have...

Funny or Not So Funny Screw Ups - No Way Out

In one of my first shows, I was doing a key card effect and the spectator did a three part cut when I told them to cut the deck. They got lucky, I got unlucky. I simply had to say, "I guess that didn't work as well as I expected it to." I'm glad I've since learned to cull and palm. A while...

Great book. You won't regret it. Make sure you read the introduction.;)

    A bit of a challenge

As I keep thinking about this, I would go with a series of stories that revolve around magic. I've got a book of Edgar Allan Poe stories and one of Grimm's Fairy Tales that would provide a start. I'm sure there are a lot of local legends you could find too -- even some research into some grim...

    Magic Books

I'll second what Christopher (@WitchDocIsIn) said. Mark Wilson's Complete Course is just that. It has a little bit of everything including cards, coins, bills, rope, sponge balls (just don't point to the empty hand), illusions and mental magic. Even more, if you read it cover to cover, you...

We didn't have movies when I was growing up... it was only shadow puppets on the cave walls.

    Lean Travellers (trick)

No coins? No cats? Is KrazyKards back? Nice handling. I didn't like the 4 card count at :25 and the 3 card count at :30. From a magician's perspective, I understand that it proves something, but from a layman's perspective it seems strange because we know how many cards you have...

    types of coins

Maybe it is my imagination, but the non-silver coins don't have the same feel to them as the silver. Silver Kennedy's are usually less than $20 each so they are an inexpensive option.

Best intermediate to advanced card magic book that is no more than 25 dollars?

My first recommendation is Art of Astonishment, Volume 1 which is $35. If you need to stay below $25, you can get a couple of the following which are each under $10: Expert Card Technique - Hugard & Braue Card Control - Buckley Card Magic of LePaul - LePaul Counts, Cuts & Subtleties - Mentzler...

The Royal Road To Card Magic - Questions

Welcome to the forums. That section in Royal Road is poorly written and hard to understand. The short answer is that the procedure is the same, but it is being used for different purposes with page 6 being used to retain position and page 7 being used to shuffle, show the cards are not on the...
