    The Art vs The Tools

My point is that it is difficult to complain about people finding methods on the internet if you are yourself exposing those methods. Ask this question... what was your presentation about? If the answer is "it was about having a coin penetrate my hand" then ask yourself if you saw that...

    The Art vs The Tools

Which is interesting coming from someone who exposes magic under the guise of teaching. Magicians have been making their own skeptics for a long time by focusing on nothing except what they are doing... which has the audience focusing on how you the magician is doing it because there is nothing...

    The Art vs The Tools

It was difficult to listen to Chris's rambling and superficial analysis. You can’t talk about what is "art" in magic without having deeply thought about and studied magic theory. My take away from his 12 minutes of rambling is that magic should be more than the method. I agree that performing...

Organizing a magic routine and show

Let’s start with YouTube. It is not a good place to learn magic and not a place to seriously study magic. I suspect that much of the technique you have learned, you have learned incorrectly. Put the first two volumes of Card College on your holiday wish list. Let’s move on to your audience. I...

Organizing a magic routine and show

Welcome to the forums. Can you give us more deatails about the show? How many people? What ages? How long? What is the performance space like? Those factors influence what effects you can perform. My one concern is the age of the audience. It takes something more than card tricks to...

New to magic, new to the forum.

Welcome. My recommendation for a starting point is Card College. I think it better explains the sleights and has Bette handling than Royal Road, Expert Card Technique and Expert at the Card Table. The only benefit for the latter three books is the price.

    Need Help With A Routine

Daniel Garcia’s Sinful Disappearing Soda in a Cup Poured Over Your Head There is a Steinmeyer effect in Conjuring Anthology called the Vicarious Coctail where a quantity of beverage is visibly transferred from one clear cup to another. There are a number of effects using liquid like...

Is vanishing magic good to buy tricks from?

The folks at Vanishing, Inc. are top notch. I buy a lot of stuff from them (especially on Black Friday). Andy, Josh and their team are great to deal with and if something is not right, they make it right. As for the "tricks", you will get the effect you order. Whether it is as described...

this makes me want to hurt something.

And there are far more helpful and respectful ways to respond to people's posts. Actions do matter. My simple rule is to respect magic. Don't reveal it on Youtube and don't watch the reveals. And, as Christopher said, I get books because I know what is on there is much better that the stuff...

    Beginner in Card Magic

Actually, visual learners learn best from books and diagrams and prefer written instructions to oral instructions. I am a visual learner. I have an amazing ability to remember most everything that I read. There is something about reading a sleight in book and putting it into motion that...

    Stage magic show

@jasonkillsx had a great response. There are two routes you can go with a "stage" show. The first is large scale illusions. If that is where you want to go, I can give you some guidance there. The second is doing smaller effects that play big. For that, start with Mark Wilson's book and...

    Water Spouting

I'm closing this thread because it was started over a year and a half ago. But I'm also leaving everyone with an admonition: Do not learn dangerous stunts from random people on the internet. As Christopher and Peter (who both know more about this than any other person posting in the thread)...

    Bad Magic Advice

That says it all. Encouraging a new magician to learn the muscle pass is like telling them to start with By Forces Unseen. "Try performing magic for kids... its easy." "Don't worry about technique, if your misdirection is good enough nobody will notice." "Learn magic off of Youtube." "You...

YOU DON'T GET TO KNOW HOW IT WORKS!

I think we agree that magic is the illusion of the impossible. Where we disagree is how we convince our audience what we have done is impossible. Let’s start off with the simple statement that I disagree with Tamariz’s theory in the Magic Way. The deliberate path of subtlety suggesting a...
