Whoops I missed the bold question...In a simple answer, I guess the props.

I personally think it's their level of creativity in the art. What they see appeals to a general audience. It's mostly what the common man can relate to. If you draw a stick figure(Card Magic of Gabriel Zudeck) and then you show a beautiful Michelangelo painting to someone such as the names...
