I think you shouldn't have a problem if you use 100 percent cotton. But I am curious onto which method you are using to pull string from your stomach. I met a guy who actually threads thread under his skin and uses a razor to cut it out. He uses cotton so I guess it is okay if you swallow it.

Use Blue tack and super glue the knot.

I do not know a marketed effect, but I have made my own. A good way to tackle this is reverse engineer it in your mind. First go through the possible ways to achieve the effect, once you get a general idea of what you want it to look like act it out. Like say if you want a card to a salt shaker...
