Have you thought about disguising flash paper as a leaf. Perhaps you could pick up the leaf and light it on fire making it burst into flames. I think your best bet would be to go with IT and flash paper.

Well, I would either get on purchasing items ASAP, or use something you already own as the show isn't that far away. If you are looking for some cheap, visual stage magic I would check out some of Andrew Mayne's material for starters.

I don't have any opinion on single tricks that are must haves. Although books, on the other hand, are a different story. Strong Magic (Darwin Ortiz), Magic and Presentation (Henning Nelms), and etc. There are just so many books that I could recommend. I'll come back and edit this post later when...
I personally think that they both accomplish the same thing... create magic. If used correctly you can create the impossible with both. I personally use both because they are just so powerful...

That site seems to be affiliated with Pub Tricks which is a huge rip off. Their can trick also looks quite similar to a Sankey effect, along with many others that are identical to other effects on the market. E.g. Saw by Sean Fields.
