"75% of performances are poor...." -- Fitzkee

@ realityone...I didn't mean to imply that kids magicicians are bad. There are loads of wonderful kids performers. What I mean is that kids process things differently. Magic that completely frys and amazes adults completely flies over their head. So kids react well to the really obvious stuff...

    Improvisational magic anyone?

Mehh...I'd be hesitant to recommend that. Certainly a class like that could help develop pre-existing talent but if you don't already have a talent with this sort of thing you are just throwing your money down the drain. You can polish a rough cut diamond but you can't polish a turd. Be sure you...

"75% of performances are poor...." -- Fitzkee

Well if we need to prevent bad magic from getting out into the world then we need to agree to a world wide moratorium on Kids Magic. Kid's magic, due to its very nature, kind of needs to be "bad magic." Kid's just respond better to that stuff.

    Success Story

I like the idea of this thread, however, you have intentionally or unintentionally skewed you poll right off the bat. Pardon my education sneaking out on me but as a graduate student studying a social science how to properly word a survey/poll was one of the things they really crammed down my...

    Signed Card to Shoe?

Uhmmm...I go with the guys discussing the use of a Mercury card fold. I also find it Ironic that a guy who wants to do card to shoe can't see the value of V2F. True, $20.00 for one sleight is a bit steep but hey, the clip shift was a $40.00, one sleight, DVD.

    Improvisational magic anyone?

Actually "Jazz Magic"was popularized by non other than Dai Vernon. He cut his chops in the New Youk club scene in the twenties doing this sort of thing. As for published material on it? Not really sure, other than a section here and a comment there, scattered throughout other books. I'm...

Saturday Night Contest - Merry Christmas 2011!

Christmas Moose Okay so my Christmas Moose decided to take a rocket ship/angel to the North Pole....Or Roswell? He was smart enough to wear the tinfoil hat to block the mind reading gamma rays! These two are not for contest because they use two decks but I thought he might...

    Tasty impromptu card magic?

Yes and no. Yes it has some challenging material. Is it really hard hitting? Well to magicians yes because we know enough about this stuff to appreciate complicated plots. To the laity, not so sure. There are certainly a few plots that are simple and direct, but there are also plots that are a...

    Making an effect "your own."

Hrmmm...Seems a bit arbitrary. I can think of some people who would never perform an effect once until they have thoroughly practiced it, rehearsed it, scripted it, and added their own personal touches to it. Then I can think of others who have performed effects more than a thousand times...

    Making an effect "your own."

Okay so first off, kudos to William Draven for inspiring this post. Last Saturday night contest he took an effect I have used many times (23 to be exact) and completely changed the patter and presentation. There were many great effects that night but that one was my personal favorite because he...

    "Limited" trend is shocking

Okay let me chime in as a guy who has done a ridiculous amount of card reviews. This may sound like a, "You should know better," post and for that I apologize. The biggest misconception I hear about card collecting from magicians is the idea that it is a "side hobby" that is common among people...

    Straight Jacket

No problem. They are a LOT of fun. They really work well for almost any performance style. I'm kind of a comedy style performer and I can really ham it up but it also works well for people with more serious presentations as well. If you ever get reliably quick watch Draven's escape. He has an...

    Straight Jacket

Okay, sorry I didn't mention that in my original post. Couple things for reassurance. The one size up S.J. is generally the recommendation for beginners. Lots of pros do it with a jacket that is perfectly fit. So you will be able to find a way out of that jacket. Just be prepared to need a bit...

poker stack after two faro shuffles and pass

The pass looks excellent, as others have said. The Poker stack is fine except for one major flaw(IMO) You do in hands faro instead of a table faro.Gamblers shuffle on the table, not in hands. So I would work on a table faro. If you ever get a chance to watch "Hit the Road" there is a seen where...

    Straight Jacket

Erm....I didn't. It really is a lot more acting than anything else. I realize that what you are saying is the "Safe" thing but frankly I don't see the straight jacket as anymore dangerous than a lot of stage effects. I am more paranoid about properly engaging a hand chopper/finger chopper. Now...

    Straight Jacket

Oh geez....I forgot to mention that when getting a real straight jacket you should generally get a size larger when you first start. Sorry if iut is too late....if it is don't worry too much. It just may take a little more practice.

    Straight Jacket

I bought from Monkey Dunngeon and was pretty happy with what I got. If I were a pro who did straight jacket escapes several times a week, I might upgrade to a Posey or pick a design from Cannon's but I feel that makes no sense for a guy just starting out in escape arts. As for a gimmicked versus...
