What is your character in magic?

That is one of the best lessons I took away from reading Derren Brown's Absolute magic. You should really dissect who you are first, the good and the bad, and then start by building a character that is essentially you. Naturally when performing you will accentuate some aspects and supres others...

    Arrogance

Mr. Kras has an interesting point. Perhaps a little bit of ego is needed to stand up in front of a room full of people an be the center of attention. I wouldn't necessarily disagree with that at all but I'll offer another perspective. Ego exists in the performing arts(magic included) because...

    Rattled... revealed!

Flooding YouTube with fake exposure videos is a interesting, and entertaining approach to a problem within out community. I applaud you for your efforts. That said, certain gaffs on the market, like Rattled, are precision made gaffs that very few people will be able to replicate on their own. So...

    My Joe Porper Card Clip

Card clips are generally for preventative maintenance. Putting cards in a clip from the moment you open a deck will keep the cards from warping as fast. They are not meant to fix already warped cards. To fix already warped cards you need a card press.

    Criticism

Well being positive certainly isn't easy at times. I can think of many times I wanted to tell a client, "Pack up your board and go home. You suck so bad you will never learn how to ride." But I didn't. I persevered and kept my "Positive, Negative, Positive" mantra going. Usually if I kept at it...

    Criticism

There is nothing inherently bad about just being straightforward and critical. It just isn't as effective as finding a nice way to do it. There are certain people, at certain times of their life who will respond better to harsh, straightforward criticism. But most of us, most of the time respond...

    Criticism

I feel that many critical magicians have some very valid points against those that they criticize. To me it isn't the criticism but the way it is usually delivered. 12 years ago I was learning to be a certified Snowboard instructor through AASI/PSIA. I learned some fundamentals about teaching...

Black Ghost Deck (First Edition) Value?

This is the brick I put my J-nuggs and Gold Arcane's in. It really jumped up the value of the decks. I'll be selling these on E-bay for $600

"75% of performances are poor...." -- Fitzkee

Elites are to be respected Steerpike. People who claim to be elite, in my experience, are to be suspected. That is the danger I see in Magic. Way to many people think they are much better than they actually are. If that is at the hart of the Fitzkey argument then I'm probably 100% on board. But...

"75% of performances are poor...." -- Fitzkee

HaHaHa me too! Guess everyone else knew I was being sarcastic. I'm a teacher I work with kids everyday. I used to be a snowboard instructor as well so I taught them in that capacity as well. I perform magic for kids almost everyday(they do tend to pester when your a magician) Anyways, many can...

"75% of performances are poor...." -- Fitzkee

Understood. Pardon my initial jump to an incorrect conclusion. Sadly all to often cheap shots are the case on forums but I'll try give people the benefit of the doubt in the future and I will take you at your word henceforth. Again apologies. Cheers!

"75% of performances are poor...." -- Fitzkee

That is a fair and reasoned response. I earnestly thank you from stepping away from what was sounding like a set up for more cheap shots. (all too common unfortunately) You have earned my respect. In the meantime I'll take you at your word and bump the Fitzkey book further up on my "need to...

"75% of performances are poor...." -- Fitzkee

Nope and I'm merely addressing how it has been presented here. If you are presenting his thoughts incorrectly then my apologies to Fitzkey. It does sound like an interesting book and I probably will check it out, but I need to get through Syzigy first LOL. Never the less those are my thoughts on...

"75% of performances are poor...." -- Fitzkee

I just disagree with that. Comparing average to average what you will find is interest generated in what people natural interests are in the first place. Average movie versus average band...people who like movies will watch the movie and people who like listening to music will go to the concert...

"75% of performances are poor...." -- Fitzkee

Not to play devel's advocate but you just stacked the deck against magicians. Try this. Take the best performers, (Greg Wilson doing close-up, or say Derren Brown doing mentalism) send these guys into the street and ask them to perform one of their best close-up effects. Now compare that to the...

    Shuffled, borrowed deck

Sounds like you have already got a lot of great advice on this so I'll just add my own two cents. When I first started out I made the concession of carrying my own deck. I did this because most laymen won't carry a deck with them at all times so if you want to do card magic....bring your own...
