    "Stealing" routines

Not exactly. First, if the trick is Ricky's, then it's hands off. No iff's and's or but's. Doesn't matter if it's one trick or one line. Second, even if the trick isn't Ricky's, but if it's associated with him, then it's hands off. You might remember the recent tiff over just this issue...

    "Stealing" routines

But as a musician, the selection of your material and the order in which you play it says something about you - it MAKES the concert. If one concert pianist went around copying the programs of another, you can bet there would be some unhappy people out there. When you consider how much...

    "Stealing" routines

And all the notes in a scale existed long before any composer put them in any order. Lance Burton's act consists of dove steal,s card manip, and some candle moves. Nothing really new there, but do you think it would be considered artistically, ethically, or commercially smart to replicate...

    Old Timer Magicians

First, Christopher's work is hardly authoritative on any subject, let alone Houdini. But let's look at your claims. Houdini prided himself on a lot of things. But pride does not equal skill or success. He was a noted ego maniac with an incredibly inflated sense of self. Check Guy Jarrett's...

    "Stealing" routines

If you see someone perform a trick, then the right thing to do ALWAYS is to ask permission to perform it. I know a lot of people disagree with this, but I think most have not been on the other side of the fence. Many magicians believe that magic should be unique, special. They spend...

What is a good place to start learning bizarre magic?

If someone has something to say, and truly care about saying it - to the point of publishing a book, to obscure it from the purchaser is either cruel or self destructive. (We are no longer in the days of the Inquisition where alchemical texts were forced to conceal messages intentionally.)...

    Magic on TV (Copyright issue)

Forums become interesting because the forum host owns the forum, but others contribute the content. The Magic Cafe claims that all content on their site is owned by them. I do not know if that is enforceable. Of course, you do have to sign up and agree to their policies to use that forum...

    Magic on TV (Copyright issue)

You cannot copyright an effect, nor can you copyright a method. You can however copyright a theatrical production. Many magicians have used this to protect their acts. They write it up as a play, complete with stage directions and theatrical/staging requirements and copyright the unit as a...

My new favorite card trick ever

It's the rule of the game. Explain your "loophole" to winning while you are demonstrating with the first card. If you get their card, you win. So, explain that when they see their card they are to slap it. Now, if they lift their hand all YOU have to do is sneak in and take it and you win...

What is a good place to start learning bizarre magic?

"paying audiences"? In Caleb's statement's online he does not even make this claim. On what do you base this assumption? In your experience presenting bizarre magic in a professional context, how do you reconcile some of the effects, their themes and the their requirements with contemporary...

My new favorite card trick ever

Karrell's offers a nice spread display which may or may not be in Wonder's routine as well. Wonder basically honed everything he touched. Same routine essentially, but with a lot of thought and touches that clean up the entire process and makes it a touch more deceptive, if I remember.

My new favorite card trick ever

If you enjoyed the Ultimate Rip Off, you should check out Tommy Wonder's handling in his Books of Wonder, available from Hermetic Press. Also, Karrell Fox had an interesting touch on this if I am not mistaken. I believe it was in one of the New Stars of Magic manuscripts. Brad Henderson

    Magic on TV (Copyright issue)

There have been books and tricks sold with performance rights reserved. Some of them have been statements of questionable legal value. Some of them, mainly routines sold privately and not commercially, would be imminently enforceable. The issue comes with the acceptance of the limitation by the...

If he legally purchased the trick (or book containing the trick) and there were no restrictions placed on performance rights which they buyer agreed to prior to purchase, then he is well within his rights to perform the effect. (Now, teaching it or re-selling it to magicians would be another...

What is a good place to start learning bizarre magic?

Years ago I hosted the first major Bizarre magic event at a conventional magic convention. For that event, Craig Snader but together an Annotated Bibliography of Bizarre Magic. This was a list of pretty much all the books on Bizarre Magic at the time. I believe H and R Magic still stocks it...

Cory should man up and remove any techniques, tricks, or ideas that stem from the contribution of "old timers." No double lifts, passes, controls, forces. No color changes. Retention Vanishes are gone. No Roth for you. No Ammar. Heck Paul Harris is no spring chicken. No more DVDs of his - or...
