I would reveal "jumping ring" trick, where you put their ring on your middle finger and it "magically" jumps on your first finger, and then back on your middle finger. And then do the finish that Gregory Wilson does in his "On the spot" DVD.

I don't know of any books on that subject. But maybe you can present it in a way of how people from different age and status respond to your magic. What is the difference between reactions from kids, teenagers, grownups, couples, athletes, scientist's, rich people, not so reach people, etc.

So to actually answer your question... I think people do it, because it is a safe route. They have seen it work. They are afraid to be themselves, because they are not certain if their character is good enough, so they pick the one that already is...

I recommend Gregory Wilson's "On the spot" DVD, because of it's entertainment value. It is about 2 hours long, it has great and easy effects. and lot's of live performances + performance/explanation in front of an assistant...

Just one tip about this... In every other post someone writes something and then put "(sp.?)" or "(spelling)" behind the word they cannot spell... I had this problem, because English is not my native language... I use Firefox as a web browser, and here is a tip for everyone who don't know how...
