Hey everyone, I have learned and practice magic for half and a year. I would like to find some kind of magics that can be performed on street, with less angle limitations and with strong effects. Any opinions? Please help... I'm now quite confuse about what I should purchase... Thanks everyone!

Ellusionist has some good DVD's out there for doing street magic like the Ninja series, Card Klub, and Street Magic. Jay Sankey has a lot of DVD's ...well just about all of his DVD's are suitable for street, Gregory Wilson has some good stuff too like Freakey. Also look into Royal Road to Card Magic. There's a lot of good card material in there that's not too hard and can be adapted to being out on the street.

Thanks William! I'll go check out on Ellusionist!
Just for reference, would you let me know which one (or two) magic is your all time favorite? Thanks!

Well other magicians say what you will about it I love the Ambitious Card Routine. It's my ever ready go-to for when I need to do something magical on the spot.

Shadow Matrix has always been a favorite close up effect of mine. I can't perform it but I love watching it done. John B. Born has one of the best shadow matrix's out there.

Torn and Restored card is also a pretty good effect, and it's a classic. That and Gypsie thread.

Ok magicisart, I want to challenge you on some things, especially because you're so new at the craft... and understand up-front, I do this to all newbies and as William will tell you, I do it because I want to see you become the best you can, ok?

If you have the Mark Wilson Course in Magic you will have several classic routines for general performance, several of which have been done on the streets for hundreds (in some cases, thousands) of years, like the Cups & Balls and several rope & coin bits. In other words, don't be afraid of slight-of-hand, you will best learn under performance conditions how to improve your handling of objects. If you don't have this book yet GET IT! It's one of the more important texts out there and one that should always be close at hand so you can refresh your mind on things; there are a few other books like this but we'll not go there right yet.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with learning A FEW commercial effects here and there but given how new you are to the craft I think you would benefit more getting used to learning the basics, like how to work with a Thumb Tip (look up the Gary Darwin books on the Thumb Tip, they're the best source going on that topic).

I would strongly discourage you from attempting Mentalism until you have a lot more experience juggling people in a performance setting and too, you become more comfortable doing a performance. Mentalism really depends on your acting & showmanship skills and as easy as it can seem mechanically, it can prove quite difficult. While you'll see lots of people doing Mental Magic these days, hard hitting Mentalism takes a whole different set of chops, so beware.

I bring up Mentalism because it's so popular, currently; especially with street performers and those looking for a unique form of "shock value", which brings me to Bizarre Magick, a cousin to Mentalism that frequently gets confused as being one in the same, even by effect developers. Bizarre Magick can be loads of fun and it is quite flexible in how it is presented (very light-hearted or very dark & heavy). It includes bits like STIGMATA as well as gore/gross type effects like SAW.

OK. . . I've given you a ton of information (and do follow the links I've given) & resources as well as encouragement. You will find the gang here at T-11 as well as the E group very supportive, many of us belonging to both forums. This particular forum however, is loaded with solid experience in several different arenas within the magical arts.

Don't hesitate to ask me anything, I'm always willing to help but I can be a bit tough in the process. You're better bet would be to listen to the more traditional types around here like RealityOne, William and small handful of others that will become apparent as you cruise through the forum.

Best of luck!

Thanks a billian Craig! It's so detail and comprehensive for such a newbie like me!

in fact I've been learning card magic for a year, but still a newbie on coin magic and other types of magic... the information you've given is just so great! I guess I'll now temparaily escape from mentalism, and learn from the basic ones~ The encouragment from you guys means a lot to me! Can't wait to check out those websites and get some of those magics!

Thanks again!
