Chi Trick

Hey,

I have been watching Derren Brown lately, and he performs a trick where he makes someone fall backward using supposed Chi. But it is actually psych suggestion. Does anyone know where I can learn it? He does perform it differently sometimes. I do have my own version but its not 100% accurate.

Based upon what I know, I don't believe there was any legitimate psychological suggestion at all. I recommend you research the dual reality concept and look into variations of Banachek's PK Touches. Onstage, I occasionally perform a similar effect using a length of monofiliment, and it looks almost identical to what Derren performs on television. It also appears as though Derren utilizes hypnosis to accent the effect for additional convincers, but it's unnecessary to complete the basic illusion.

If you've any other questions, feel free to hit me up.

Was it really Chi or him demonstrating the One Inch Punch. Which is an actual move, but unless the guy is standing like one inch in front of you and is willing to let you do the move. it won't have any effect.

It wasn't chi or the one-inch punch. As stated above, it was dual reality in combination with hypnosis.

To sum up the above answers...

It's not really "learn-able" and it's not worth your while...

Actually, the effect is very learnable and very practical. Why wouldn't it be worth someone's effort to study and perform? The basic method (from what I gather) is relatively simple and may be accomplished at a moment's notice as long as the performer has an audience of two or more. It can be done on the street or on a formal stage so it's very versatile. Additionally, although hypnosis dramatically improves the effect, it's really not necessary by any means. It's a fail-proof effect.

Then apparently, I have no idea what I'm talking.

That happens rather often, but I hold fast to what I'm saying anyways. Why the hell would you ever admit a mistake?

Listen to Romeo then, since he actually knows what hes talking about whereas I'm just faking. Hopefully nobody was led too far astray...

Well it is learnable, and practical. I have my own method that has no set up, hypnosis, dual reality, just psych suggestion. I have performed it a few times like how Derren performs it. On his special Heist. Where he has 2 pairs of people lined up and one side focus' their Chi energy and pushes the other person over. Note they are 2 meters from each other.

Yeah, I don't know if everyone in this thread's talking about the same effect. When I read the OP I was thinking of the one he does in The Heist. I don't think that uses dual reality, it's more actual suggestion, probably combined with a mechanical method to make it foolproof.

Me neither.

The one in Heist uses the Chi patter, but he performs variants of it in different specials.

From what I gather, the second link is a pretty simple display of (very) traditional hypnosis. I assume this because the two individuals who fall backwards appear to be in obvious states of trance. I'm pretty confident anyone with the slightest experience in hypnosis would agree; it's probably the most practical method of achieving the stunt.

I recommend the Stage Hypnosis Training Course by Richard Nongard for more thorough information. I recently purchased it myself, and it's a great resource for aspiring hypnotists. I started using hypnosis to supplement my mentalism work about a year ago, and I've been fortunate to have a great deal of success with it. I'm admittedly still a noob, but I'm finding new ways to incorporate hypnosis more regularly into my work everyday. Richard Nongard's course is one of the most comprehensive I've seen available. It looks and feels very much like an interactive live session with practical application. If you want to be able to perform this particular stunt along with many others, I recommend looking into this hypnosis course. It's available through Hypnosis Gurus.

There's also been a lot of hype surrounding The Manchurian Approach as well. It's a pretty decent starting point, but it has a lot of overlap from Anthony Jacquin's book, Reality is Plastic. I do think Ant does a decent job at showing practical uses for hypnosis in the context of magic and mentalism, and it was refreshing to see raw footage of hypnosis performed on the streets. There were just various moments the DVD set felt dry and did not substantially add to or build upon the concepts taught in the book. So with that said, I would personally recommend his RIP over his DVD set. His customer service is pretty impeccable also; he legitimately cares to hear about people's success stories. He's more than willing to personally guide you through your endeavors in hypnosis and provide tips and advice where necessary. Ant's products are available through his website.

Hope this helps.
