Hello! I'm Evelyn Yvonne, an African-American woman who performed magic/illusions in the 1960s-80s. I gave my first magic show in my family's living room in Chicago at the age of 8. During the 70's, I performed at children's birthday parties, and for community events such as block club parties, schools, summer festivals, neighborhood variety shows, etc. I was fortunate to perform on a local TV station talent show, where the special guest was magician Marshall Brodien (Whizzo from Bozo's Circus and TV Magic Cards fame). I also performed for the Kwaanzaa Celebration at Malcolm X College, where I was a student.

I was an associate in the Society of American Magicians and attended one of the annual Get-Togethers in Colon, Michigan, where a teenage Brother named Dale Penn received an award for Outstanding Young Magician.

One of my fondest memories was attending the SAM convention in Boston. During the banquet, I was seated next to a young Doug Henning, who was very excited about his new Broadway production, "The Magic Show" that was scheduled to open later that year.

It's good to see a network of fellow magicians of color here on Facebook. I'm fairly new to FB, but I'll stop in occasionally to see what's new and exciting in the fascinating world of magic.

Have a wonderful day, my Brothers & Sisters, and leave your audiences wanting more!

Haha I think she wrote this for facebook and copied and pasted it for here.

Small error. No biggy. ;)

Anyway, it is great to have you here Miss Yvonne. Great to see new faces around here. Even greater to see new faces with experience in the field. I hope to see some great things from you here. :)

I've got to be hontest, with a thread title like that, opening sentence like greetings my name is Miss what ever, and a user profile with only 1 post to it I was sooo braced to spam flag it for one of those Nigerian scam letters. I'm glad I actually read the entire post.

Welcome to our forum, it certainly looks like you had a fun career.

Ha-ha, good one on the Nigerian scam -- I never thought of that! I have been known to make money disappear but I think many people have that talent! Well, thanks for the welcome and for making me smile.

My post was meant for a magicians' sub-board but apparently it went onto a larger forum in this category. Since I'm new to this forum and a novice with Facebook, I have no explanation for this. Let's just call it magic! :)

People have asked me why there are so few women in magic. I don't have an answer. My question is why people don't recognize magicians' assistants -- who are often women -- as magicians. They are indispensable to the art!

I performed magic at a number of venues: schools, private parties, community fairs, etc. One memorable performance was at the Chicago Public Library Cultural Center where my dance class (another hobby) gave a recital. I built the "Arabian Tent" on stage while the troupe was performing, producing a number of props for the performers from the tent and finally, a live girl who danced in the recital. The audience was very surprised and the illusion was the highlight of the show.

Have a great day!

Evelyn Yvonne
