Let's really address this, in it's plainest form. We are going to use our magic chops to impress a young lady, yes? Okay, now just for a second, here me out, does a little part of you not think, that the girl in question might find it... a little corny? In my humble opinion, I just think, that in that type of social setting, it's a little cheesy. Look at it from another artist's perspective- a singer, for instance. Do you think the first thing a trained singer does when out on a date is bang out a few bars of 'you look wonderful tonight'? I really doubt it fella's!

I just think, like everything, it has a time and a place. And the first date is neither.

Absolutely, I agree as well.
We should be proud of our magic, and we should DEFINITELY show it to anyone thats interested. But unless you're either A) Performing professionally at the time of the incident, or B) the recipient of a direct request to show some magic, Surely you'd need to have the 'spectator' interested in you, first?

Not arguing with you guy's, you onviously know what works for you...

I was doing some Flourishes in college
I could Say I was practicing but that would be lying
I was ShowingOff(vol3) and Im proud of it
I you can then you might as well do it
I got Tired Of ShowingOff(Vol3) and hungry so
I went to the food court and approached the FastFood joint there(Carl's Jr)
I started doing (unconsiously) some one handed cuts and when I did
Asher's Diving Board Shouldn't be a Double(best Aerial by Brian Tudor)
One of the cards flew to the other side of the counter
The attractive Cashier gave it to me and Again out of instinct I started to do Brian Tudor's The Politician.
I ended up having a date with the chick
Really
Its Not A romantic routine at all
I made her card switch places with the queen of hearts all over the place.
So just do a bunch of tricks without asking for their permission
and maybe you'll end up having a date them too.

Its not like I had a plan,I'm going to go do ADBSBAD and then.......
It all happens
So yes you can pick up chicks with card tricks
And they don't have to be romantic tricks either.

I think my charisma had something to do with it but the tricks definitely helped
otherwise I would have purchased my food and then leave without talking to the chick

Well, i'm sure this works for you then. I however, approach magic with repect and integrity, and I approach my audience with the same level of respect. I wouldn't consider 'doing a bunch of tricks without asking permission' to be very respectful, from any side if the spectrum.
It's down to you, however YOU want your magic to be seen, but personally... No thankyou.

As it stands, by the way, I asked my girlfriend what she thought of this... She thinks it's a pretty lame idea. But again, what does she know? She's only a girl... going out with a magician...

That little part of you that thinks its a little corny is RIGHT, you should listen to that voice. However, this voice isn't telling you not to perform for cute girls, it's telling you to DO BETTER MAGIC.

Sure, a singer doesn't belt out a few bars upon first meeting a girl, but then again, how many singers have you seen working walkaround at a bar?

Magic IS well suited to the situation, it just has to be good.

And I don't mean good like is generally meant here. I don't mean technically skilled, I don't mean smooth, and I don't mean deceptive. Of course it must be all of those things, but most importantly, it must be EXPRESSIVE!
 
sigh kids ive said it like 90 times already

magic ALONE trying to pickup women is useless...this meaning if you have no other qualities- such as no humor, no cockyness, no confidence = no chance

but if you have all of these, and then you include the mysteriousness aspect of magic, well kids, you have a killer effect on a womens mind, and should always be able to get them home with you.

I appreciate your comments, but the fact is- I'm not a beginner or some guy doing a few disjointed effects here and there- i'm a professional. I stand by my comments about it being a little corny AND the reference to the singer, BECAUSE, I wasn't talking about a walk around performer working, I was talking about a magician in a social scenario. I agree with almost all of your other points.

ok let me tell you a story of a little boy only known as Phenomena.

Phenomena went through most of highschool as a loser, didnt dress to impress, was shy towards women, had very few dates. Then something amazing happened to him. He walked into his girlfriends room while she was banging some guy. So Phenomena was naturally depressed for a few weeks until one day he woke up and said "why am i letting this crap bother me, its life, get over it, itll happen again". A new Phenomena was born that day. He began roaming the streets and the net in search of what he was doing wrong towards women.

He came across some good articles on how to be cocky/funny/mysterious, basically whatever the average joe is doing, you dont do. You have to stand out in their mind in order to be "that much better" than every other guy out there. Phenomena obviously thought this was rubbish, as he was always told that women love nice guys, who would bend over backwards for them.

But Phenomena was a nice guy, he was a very nice guy, but he barely got anywhere, so Phenomena decided to test this "new theory". Phenomena was out shopping one day at a clothing store where he saw this amazingly beautiful girl shopping. She was accompanied by some average looking, sleightly overwight, glassess wearing joe. Phenomena thought theres no way they are together, they must be brother sister or hes her gay friend (all attractive girls have at least 1 gay friend). Phenomena managed to hear how they spoke to eachother, and noticed the guy always nit picking at her, but not in a demeaning way, but in a cocky/funny way.

And then it slapped Phenomena in the face, he instantly realize the nice guy was uselss, and this new "cocky/funny/mysterious" style was the correct way to go. So in grade 12, after 4 years of nothingness in highschool, Phenomena would speak to every girl he saw, and would try everything that came to mind. Sure at the start Phenomena was missing a lot, he was nervous and didnt know what to say in every situation. But as time went by, Phenomena got better and better at "picking up" women after only a mere 6 months of hardcore practising. Phenomena feels he mastered the "art of picking up" but then he saw some lame magician at the bar. This magician was very lame, how he blew his audience away with mindblowing tricks, and how this lame guy had women all over him all night, because of how they melted to his lame magic tricks.

This was the starting event that got Phenomena into magic for the sole purpose of using it as an "social weapon". After only 3 months of learning lame magic tricks to pickup girls, he found himself at some bar with some friends, carrying a deck of cards. There were 2 attractive girls at this bar, and his friends pushed Phenomena to approach them. One of his friends said multiple times to "buy them a drink", but Phenomena knew damn well that buying a drink is boring and predictable, so he said "ill approach them after i go pee".

Phenomena comes back to the bar only to find that his dimwit friends had baught the girls a drink, and said it was from me. Now Phenomena had a horrible situation on his hands. He knew that doing something that "every other guy" would do is not the way to start things at all. But Phenomena was not discouraged, instead he walked up to them and basically said "Sorry girls but that drink wasnt for you, i dont buy the drinks, women usually buy drinks for me".
The women proceded to ask "why do omen buy them for you"
Phenomena responded "because i make a tiny bet with them that if i can completely astonish them, they owe me a drink"
the women replied with "and how will you manage to do that, we are not impressed that easy"
Phenomena was quick to answer with "well then i guess i wont show you some magic, because you wont be very impressed, ill just take those drinks to the girls at the other table"
The 2 girls instantly pleeded with Phenomena to stay there and show them some magic, they stated that they loved magic.

So Phenomena began doing some lame, simple magic tricks such as biddle, and some transpos for the girls who arnt easially impressed. After only 2 tricks the women were speechless for about 20 seconds, until one of them yelled "bartended, we need some drinks for him"
They baught Phenomena some drinks, quickly followed by a kiss/exchange of numbers, followed by some bed shaking the following day.

For Phenomenas first outing using magic, it was an amazing success.

The morale of this story, those who say women who arnt impressed with magic (assuming you know how to pickup without magic) dont have a fluxing clue.

I am also not a beginner.

We have a difference of opinion regarding magic's USE in the situation.

I don't mean to imply that magic is a cure all. If you walk up to a girl w/ the subtext and framing of "Please let me impress you so that you will like me", she will perceive you as of a lower social status than her. This is true in any context, even without magic. Telling a boastful story can appear just this way as well.

Magic is a tool to be used. A hammer improperly used, will break your foot.

Magic properly used, can break ice, allowing you to approach an otherwise unapproachable group of women, differentiate yourself from other males in the area, establish an alpha male status in a group, as well as projecting your personality in an interesting way.

Notice that none of this has anything to do with actually trying to impress anyone.

Also notice that you need charisma to start with, magic alone is not enough.

And I apologize, I didn't meant to insinuate that your magic was no good, I meant simply good for the situation.

For instance, I would NEVER use a card trick in these situations. I MIGHT do mentalism w/ cards, but never a card trick. There is too much cliche baggage associated w/ card tricks, and I would prefer something more pure.

I personally use psychological forces, billet work, and metal bending primarily.

All of these presentations highlight MY unusual abilities, they are not about the props, but about me. There is a big difference.
 
Okay, I can see that opinion will only garner argument, or at best, attempts at somehow changing said opinion.

I was going to mention earlier that this thread be closed, as what started as a couple of simple questions has now spiralled into 'I can definitely pick up chicks with tricks...'

Just a litlle sad...

We've heard from a few guys who have maybe considered the actual opinion of a lady friend, and even heard from Katie who gave her opinion on the whole thing, but this just comes across as some kind of weird 'boys club' type thing. I'm outta this thread guys.

Well... What an interesting discussion this has become.

I have to agree with CL on a number of levels, I am guilty of doing some magic on the 1st date with my lady though - However, she does have Criss Angel in her heroes section on myspace and does a cardistry bunny burlesque routine :P

I feel that when in a social scenario as we imagine this to be, sure, if there is a fair few people around we all know that it's impossible to get away with out reading a few minds or locating some signed selections, however, looking at this as a 1on1 sitch it might end up being weird and awkward..

Sometimes it can work nicely, like if it comes up in conversation and she asks you for a demo... I'm a very intimate performer by nature as any of you that have seen me perform can understand, I make a note to break the contact barrier early on and use a sexy tone of voice and lots of eye contact, so I personally can get away with this kind of thing as it seeps easily from my normal persona.

Moderation is the key here though. I'd do a single little demo, something nice that get's her involved, maybe a coin bend in her hand or something. Not a multi-phase ACR, then an invizible deck routine, (Perhaps solitary confederate from my book proximity effects, available from all good magic dealers. Dealers contact murphy's magic supplies...God I'm good. :P) finishing with the Icarus Effect!

I know alot of magicians whose performing persona is very different to mine, most in fact, so it's impossible to perform without appearing disjointed or perhaps a bit cheesy. There's nothing wrong with that, that kind of persona sells in the real world - I only get gigs because I can bend things ;)

Magic isn't a tool to get the opposite sex interested, or to seal the deal, it's something different than most people are used to - it's good fun and can be very sexy, but if the girl is interested, she's interested in you, not the latest flourishy colour changes you've been working on.

Moreover, I find topics like this a big sexist - like women are just going to fall in love with you because you can fool people with a card trick!? How has this discussion progressed past Katie's advice - as she is MORE than qualified to answer? Honestly, I don't want a woman that loves me because of my magic tricks - I am happy if she enjoys them, but when the cards and coins are put away...I hope she still likes me.

Most women fall in love with the magician's personality - which when performing, should be a highlight of your best qualities - when she realizes that you aren't "ON" all the time - she may not be so enamored with the real you.

Regardless of all that - magic is really not meant to break the ice...as any magician that performs know, you have to do that yourself via an introduction...before you do ANY magic at all. I am not sure any women would fall for....DID you lose a white knife? How about a black one?

Like I always say - just doing magic will attract girls - if you are good enough, you don't have to target them, and they will target you. Lastly - RE-read Katie's advice - MAGIC IS NOT A TURN ON! It is like saying you are great at CHESS or you are a MIME - takes brains and talent, but it still really doesn't make most women desire you.

ive said it specifically, magic, when used with your already excisting expertise in pickup, can get you a one night stand.

which, no offence to women, but thats all im looking for currently.

i go out every thursday/sat night and am always able to bring at minimum 2 girls home over those 2 days. Some days i use no magic whatsoever, others i do.
Either way, for me, both work.

it was when i was 17 and knew nothing about women
it was the best thing that ever happened to me because if it hadent happened, id still be home every night and never meet anyone new.

Im just seeing the people saying that magic is "lame" for attracting women, i see no evidence on their side backing it up.

In fact if you read some books, and understood women you would realize why magic is infact very good for building attraction, but as i said, you need to use it properly.

so my 'you people are idiots" comment was directed to those who flat out said "its lame and wont work"
because they obviously have 0 experience, or they used it wrong and got rejected, thus claiming it doesnt work.

In my humble opinion (because that is ALL i have ever tried to put across...) you're a dork. Plain and simple. But, to be fair, you do seem like a super cool pick up artist...

Dee, you don't need to lighten the tone mate, Phenomena's posts are so cringeworthy I laugh and blush with every one!
