Magic Club

i am going to start a magic club at school and i'm wondering a couple of things:
1. is it a good idea to start the club?

2. what should we do?

3. if i do start what should i bring to the club?.

I know they probably won't but do they have a book or a dvd on this subject.

thanks if you can help.

Here's my two cents.

Most magic clubs have a constitution and follow a regular business meeting format with old business, new business....blah blah blah and then sharing of some magic tricks.

Most guests that want to join show up to a certain number of meetings, usually 3, and then they decide if they want to join or not. If they do....usually they demonstrate that they know a few tricks or have at least dabbed in magic a little bit. Their our positions such as the president, v.p. and treasurer.

Fees and fund raisers can help generate money to pay for a lecturer to come speak and do some hands on magic for your group.

Don't forget to go do some good service for a library, hospital, or a church youth group to get your club's name out there and get some PR.

I don't know...these are just some of my ideas. Anyone else may chime in.

Yeah as boodjammer said, give them a chance to see what the club will be like and make sure they know the basics of magic. You'll want to advertise this isn't a magic club to come join and you'll learn tricks as you'll get lay people so clearly advertise its for magicians (besides them demonstrating tricks will sift out any laymen who came but just to make sure they don't come...).

1.I think a club is a good idea, but only if there are magicians in your community (don't make a club as a 'calling all magicians' siren) and not just beginners as it'll end up being a class-session.

2.You should talk to one another, share your ideas and exchanging of tricks usually occurs but don't make this an exchange party.

3. Bring yourself and anything you need to do magic, if you're starting a club you'll need to establish you're competent and will be able to lead and be able to contribute.

I think both boodjammer and tsarothpaco have touched on pretty much everything.

The only thing that I'd like to throw in is, especially with teenagers and the likes, don't make it too formal. Yes, have a president/club leader, treasurer, etc. - but don't become too egotisitc and act like you're better than everyone. I would suggest to keep the environment on a friendly level, as if you're all just friends hanging out. This will attract newer members and keep your current members.

Good luck!

You have a ton of great advice here. You definitely don't want it to turn into a free for all exchange of secrets and pirating dvds session. That isn't what a magic club is all about and yet many young teens seem to think it is. By all means help each other with sleights, recommend resources such as good books, dvds, plan some events, and like everyone else has said HAVE FUN. Do not let it get to your heads because there is someone always out there that knows more and you can learn a lot from others. It isn't about showboating. Feed off of each other's excitement and experiences. Learn what has worked for others and what hasn't worked. I can honestly say that I was never in a club until the past six months and it was the best move I've made. I've learned so much and well....have spent more money than ever on magic items as well...ha ha. You'll have to keep us posted how it goes. Good luck.
