I received a magic set early on in my life but only performed small tricks for my parents. The interest was always there but very minimally until it was rekindled by a Youtube video of Chicago Opener. This sparked my interest and I immediately wanted to learn it. After finding other resources for learning mind blowing magic like the effects here on Theory 11, I was permanently hooked.

One way is by starting with an effect I already do, whether it be an age old trick, something fairly new or one of my own ideas. I then see if there is any way to adapt that idea or improve upon it, or somehow change the end result of the trick which is one of my personal favorites. The other method I use is to sit and write down some ideas for effects and then see what ways it could be accomplished, even if its over the top and impractical. These impractical ideas can potentially be used later on or just help enhance your creativity process.
