Foreign Exchange

Josh Janousky

Digital Instruction $4.95
Special Thanks: Chris Kenner, Lee Asher, Daryl, Eric Jones, and Gregory Wilson

Foreign Exchange is an effect that uses three coins from different countries One at a time the magician causes the coins to visually jump from his left hand to his right. This is an updated take on the classic 3 Fly plot. Foreign Exchange resets instantly and is perfect for any type os trolling/street magic.

In addition to learning Foreign Exchange, you will learn TQ, an impromptu effect that ties in perfectly with Gregory Wilson's "A Questionable Trick." TQ uses a penny and a dime. The magician fairly places the penny in the spectators hand and picks up the dime. With just a wave, the dime the magician was holding has now changed into the penny, and in the coin in spectators hand has changed into a dime.

NOTE: To perform this effect, you will need a standard coin gimmick called a Copper Silver Coin.

Excellent take on a favorite plot. Well planned, executed, and taught. I am having a lot of fun with this! Thanks, Josh!

In the interest of full disclosure I must point out that I am a friend of Josh and that I am not particularly fond of the Three Fly plot. So understand that some points made in this review may be skewed favorably towards a friend and others are skewed unfavorably towards that plot as a whole. All in all it should even out. Overall I think this is a good addition to an over done plot.

Gimmicks and Materials: This is a download so nothing is provided. There is a gimmick used in this effect but it is one that most coin magicians will already have. In addition you will need a half dollar, an English Penny, and a 1/2 dollar sized Chinese coin.

The Method: There are very few original moves taught in this effect so mostly what you are learning is specific handling that allows you to perform three fly with three different coins. Some of the moves were new to me but they are moves I have seen performed before so I doubt that they will be new to people who put more effort into coin magic. I have studied a few three fly routines and the fundamental moves and routine haven’t been altered too much. I do find the routining clever.

There are two fundamental flaws I see in most 3 fly routines. First, is the moment in the routine where one coin is moved from one hand to the other “slowly”. This is usually passed off as a comedy bit and I have also seen some styles where this move as done with a flourish, such as the muscle pass. Josh does a good job of finding a nice “comedy” solution to this that makes the comedy solution both humorous and, more importantly, gives this bit a reason behind the comedy. So I think this effect does a good job of solving this fundamental 3-fly flaw.

The second flaw I see in many 3-flys is “what to do with the last coin?” This I wasn’t as happy with. I’m glad to say he doesn’t end the routine with one of those weird palms that make the magician look as if he/she suddenly developed an acute case of arthritis just moments after deftly displaying a barrage of graceful coin vanishes and appearances. The final vanish is certainly better than those but it doesn’t fully resolve this issue. So all and all I’d say that solving one of these two major problems is a good contribution.

Final analysis: So all things considered this is a good effect and an admirable contribution to the 3-fly plot. Methodologically he has come up with a very good solution to one of the “awkward” moments in 3-Fly and an average solution to the other. Routining is where this effect shines. This is a way to structure a 3-fly that uses three distinct coins and different coins are seen to “jump” in each phase. In one phase in particular he even asks the spectator which coin they want to use. That was certainly a nice touch in my opinion. Though this plot has seemingly been “done to death” I think Foreign Exchange is a practical addition and not just a different way to wave your hands around. If you are someone who does three fly I th

I'm a huge fan of 3 Flys and I was really drawn to this one because it used different types of coins. I used to perform Lee Asher's Three Stylin, but I have found myself performing this more and more. Josh explains everything really well and covers everything. The download was also edited very professionally; definitely worth the five dollars. Also, the Bonus Effect is very nice and is now my go to impromptu effect. Based off of the fact that Josh performs this before a Gregory Wilson trick, I purchased the On the Spot DVD as well. Five out of five stars!

Ok first off I would like to say I'm not a very big fan of coin magic. That being said, I do love this effect and will be performing it!

It's not very difficult at all although a little bit of coin experience wouldn't hurt, haha.

Josh is a wonderful teacher and you will have no problem learning what you need to know with over the shoulder angles and slow motion replays.

Josh also teaches you a bonus effect called TQ which is a simple and impromptu coin transposition that is great to create a little buzz! Overall, if you love coin magic and would like to have another coin routine that will work wonders, get it! You won't be disappointed!

Josh Janousky is one of the bright up and comers in magic. He's a great thinker and has a good imagination which you'll see in his take on the "3-Fly" routine, "Foreign Exchange".

The effect itself isn't too difficult, although I would probably familiarize yourself with coin magic before diving into the effect itself. Josh does a great job of teaching the effect with a great over-the-shoulder camera view. The effect looks magical to the spectator and it's practical from a magician standpoint. If you are even slightly interested in coin magic pick this trick up.

Also as a bonus effect you'll learn what Josh calls, "TQ" a great opener to Greg Wilson's "A Questionable Trick". I've used TQ quite often as a stand alone effect. It kills. So do yourselves a favor and spend the best $5 you'll spend all month and download Josh Janousky's "Foreign Exchange". You won't be disappointed!

On a side note, if you want to see more of Josh's work, pick up this months' MAGIC. He's got a killer ring effect in there. DO IT!

Good trick that doesn't require too much skill. Its a good take on the 3-fly plot as different coloured coins move from each hand. Practical as well.

It also comes with a bonus trick (doesn't really work on Australian currency), but its a very easy in the spectator's hand transpo of two coins that is impromptu. Which I really like.
